Fuzzy display on startup - iMac 20" early 2009

During installation of a new superdrive, I unplugged the 4 inverter cables from the display, once all put back together and on startup I get a fuzzy screen (like bad terrestrial tv signal). Once the mac has started up i can put it to sleep then wake again and the screen is back to normal. Could this be the inverter? why is it ok after sleep?

Thanks

I have been booting up then putting computer asleep for about 5 years as work around. I decided to search for solution and this did solve my issue. I myself did not have a mac keyboard, for PC keyboard to reset PRAM is Windows key + ALT + P + R when powering up, wait until you hear the second chime at bootup.
