Repair information on hard drives or hard disks. Hard drives are magnetic data storage devices. They are used in most desktop, laptop, and server due to their low cost and high data density.

Why does the drive stop responding when connected to the USB sometimes

Sometimes the drive is not recognized after it is plugged in. Even though you can feel the disk rotating, the light does not glow nor is the drive recognized by your computer. This behaviour erratic.

Once this has happened it can cause master directory damagethat will increase problems until the drive is hosed. Use Disk Utility->repair disk for directory damage, back up your data. N.

I would suspect that the drive is not receiving enough power at times. Does this always happen at the same USB connection? If so does moving it to another USB port allow it to work properly? Of course if the drive is powered by external means I would worry the drive may be failing. Ralph

+ agreed, different ports offer different power levels

You may check your Energy setting for 'Put Drives to Sleep' and ensure that is off.

Update

You could have a bed drive (even if new). Look, if a company makes a million of something there is a good chance that at least one of them is bad. I have a FireWire drive that is externally powered and sometimes it just stops. I think it is the drive itself.

The energy setting just made the difference for me. I was using this as a bootable volume for a new snow leopard computer, and the default settings for both battery and power adapter were turning off the drive whenever I tried to use it to boot. Helpful tip. Thanks.
