iPhone 5c Black Screen After Replacement?

What a nasty! I have recently been learning to fix phones and had great success until my wifes 5c came along! I have done 5/6 5c's with no problems and got my wife a 5c to test screens with. I have had no end of problems with it and "new" screen.

From black screens but you can see the back light, three white stripes down the right hand side, white squares etc etc all with a non responsive touch ive had it all. I thought I had broken it. Even the original screen was the same when I tried to get it back on although this has been replaced at some point so was not an Apple original screen.

When I plugged just the LCD cable in the screen would be fine could see the screen lock slider on screen the lot. As soon as I plugged the digitizer cable in the above would all happen again which of course points to a problem with the Digitizer cable / plug or around that area.

There is under the black tape covering the logic board just above the digitizer socket in the top left corner a nodule coming out of the board. Not sure whats its for and not sure if it interferes with the digitizer plug seating correctly onto the logic board but have been focusing around this area. Also read the comments above ref the exposed digitizer connector and LCD connector on replacement screens.

Not sure how but I have resolved the issue after 3 days of banging my head on the desk. I fitted another screen that had been playing up as above but instead of fitting with the screen at a 90 degree angle I let it lean further forward away from the phone so I could get a real good look at the connector. Once I was sure it was connected I then got a nylon spudger and let it rest on the digitizer cable and started to bring screen back up to the 90 degree angle to fit the lcd cable and earpiece / camera cable and hey presto it worked. The spudger was then inbetween the digitizer cable and lcd cable so they were not touching. I removed the spudger and it all stilled worked and the touch screen was good to go.

Closed it up quick and tested it. The front camera would not work so did a hard reset and thats back and the screen was flickering at the top but that has settled as well.

I now working on 2 theories. The spudger has either held the digitizer connection in place whilst I have connected the LCD and Ear speaker connector or as it created a gap between the digitizer connection the LCD cable which lays on top of it it protected it from interference. It makes me think its in the area as like I said when I connected just the LCD connector and powered the phone the screen was fine.

Im going to do some more testing with the above, however it will have to wait till after the weekend. The wife wont let me go near her phone at the mo!

I had exactly same problem but mine iPhone had repeating charging sound (every 5 second). Same thing, after screen replacement LCD went black and unresponsive. Mine problem was in one capacitor, it was under the Shield, next to the Wi-Fi chip. After removing shorted capacitor phone turned ON normally but power button and volume up/down doesn't work anymore.

My advice is to check capacitor if you have tried everything :)

Same issue here. Black display (backlight on) however I didn't see any apple logo. Brand new screen and undamaged.

Check your screen flex cable, does it have 3 exposed solder points? This section needs to be covered fully otherwise it can short against the metal insides of the phone. If the points are exposed then you have most likely shorted out a component on the logic board.

In the past I have seen this happen with iPhone 5 screens (all though the opposite would happen where you get display but no backlight). Failing that, re-install the old screen back into the phone (or partially) to diagnose if your issue is with the screen you purchased or a logic board issue. If you have a damaged logic board then it's extremely hard to diagnose what component could be the issue and usually even harder to fix (usually requires some super fine soldering or re-balling). Hope this helps.

eman05 could be right, it's also easy to knock components off the board where the connector for the screen is, since it's covered by black tape, usually goes un-noticed.

This is what i noticed.

I experiencing this same issue, i tried different LCDs.

Aftermarket and OEM (from a brand new iPhone 5C)

Both screens shows no image, but you can see that the LCD Backlight is on.

When i install back the original LCD that was on the iPhone 5C (broken) It will work perfectly.

iPhone 5C is running iOS 8.0

Haven't found a solution for this issue.

Mine was same as first persons question but the phone was so dead that it would display then once screen locked if tried to unlock again would be completely black. Soft reset then screen would display until lock. So fully charged then powered on and worked fixed issue

I have lost over 3 hours of what should have been a straightforward fix. I removed a working digitizer from one 5C, then replaced the broken one on my wife's 5C. Went through all the trouble of replacing all the screws only to power it on to a backlit black screen. I've unscrewed, reseated connectors, added tape/paper in between connectors (several others have reported this to have fixed the problem) more times than I can count. It is infuriating. Earlier in this process, the screen came on depending on the angle that the assembly was at. I can only guess that the issue lied in the ribbon cable for the screen. After several different yanks and pushes of the cable, it went from half screen to black and white checkerboxes/lines to now nothing. I have concluded that the digitizer cable is now kaput and have ordered a replacement via Amazon 1 day. Hopefully it just plugs in and viola, my nightmare is over. This was so %#*@ infuriating. I will update on how the new replacement digitizer works out.

I had the same problem, thanks to my engineering skills i had to rework (heat with a station heatgun) the Broadcom touchscreen controller and VOILA.....It worked for me...

I don't have any answers but I'm having similar issues. I did a screen replacement a iphone 5c and now I can't get it to turn on. It will vibrate but nothing on the screen. The old one was working just cracked screen. So I put it back on and it did the same thing. I tried holding the home and power button for 10-15 secs still nothing. I can't lose the information that's on it isn't mine. The parts were new so I don't understand why. I've ordered another complete set with everything . Until then does anyone have any suggestions.

Had same issue was fix was making sure lcd connector was securely in place as image would go on and off. I would press power button to make sure lcd was on and held down connector with finger until screen slid in place leaving the metal plate off Iphone working fine now with zero issues
