you may have to reinstall the OS - seems to be a corruption I'd say

Not knowing how and not being able.. are totally different things.

Try the following:

  • Reset the PRAM - Restart and Press Option-Command-P-R until you hear two beeps.
  • Run Apple hardware test - Restart and press D while also putting in Install Disk 1
  • Use verbose mode - Start up and press Command V
  • If all else fails try running it in target disk mode (hold down T at startup) and copy all of your files off it just to be sure.

thanks a lot for the reply.... when i tried the hardware test, the screen blinked and followed by an error message in the middle of the screen, then the computer will shutdown so fast that i cannot read that error messsage...

I forgot to mention that if you are running 10.5 or 10.6 the AHT is on the second disk - the applications disk.

when i tried target disk mode nothing happened....i just got the thing like "Y"...what i should be getting in disk mode? and when i tried verbose mode it just stopped with the line that says "MAC OS not yet set"....still set up is not loading when i am pressing C key...

That "Y" is the Firewire symbol -- it means you've successfully started up your computer in target disk mode and you can use it like an external hard drive. If you connect it to another computer via Firewire, its hard drive should appear on the desktop of the second computer and you can copy your files as a backup to be safe, as AussieMac suggested.

Instead of holding C, Hold the Option Key at startup with install disk 1 in the drive, - a Symbol representing the disc should show, if so, click on it to continue.

A friend of mine's MacBook was getting the same error message upon booting up. We thought it was a logic board failure, and bought her a new computer. Shame, too because after picking around with it for a while, I realized that it just needed the OS reinstalled. Oh well. . . . . It's working great now!

Call the Apple store. The disk are about $15 each. Before you call use the link to positively identify your computer. Good luck.

Hello guys,

My macbook is now running fine. I found out that somehow if a part of the logic board was touching metal like screw or to body itself you can have this problem. some kind of short circuit should i say. this can cause that restarting issue message. what i did was i dismantle my machine and re-assemble it and checking every now and then if its booting up. then the issue came again after i just put this one "screw". Wollah that's the culprit! and to make sure i unscrewed it and check if the machine will boot up normally. then it booted with no sign of the problem.i did this checking couple of times just to make sure and verified that the screw is touching some super small resistor/capacitor like thing. what i did i just put some insulation (electrical tape will do) on top of these components and problem solved.

Based on my experience, I can just loosen the screws one at a time and check if the machine will boot up after each unscrewing.

Anyway, all the post in this thread is very helpful in each and every way. The only point is which will apply to the situation and the more options you have the more chances of solving the issue.

Again, with the error message saying "You need to restart your computer" Hold down power button for several seconds or press restart" which comes up in four languages. Check out all the other postings but also consider mine...it was a hopeless case i thought
