It may just be an issue with the flex cables, especially if they look physically damaged beyond the standard bends; those things can even cause grief when they look good. That said since it's blowing them out when the printhead isn't connected, the power supply or mainboard is gonna be suspect here.

Not worth fixing. Dump the printer and move to something else. This will cost more to fix then it costs to replace.
