Malfunctioning Vibration Controls:
The vibration motors within the controller are not functioning as intended.
Vibration May Not be Supported by the Game:
Try using the controller on another game. If the vibration controls function, it is likely that the original game does not support vibration controls.
Controller Needs Updates:
If the controller is in need of an update, it can cause buttons to now work properly. To update the controller:
1) Use the USB Cable to connect the controller to the USB port on the console
a. For Xbox Series X, the port is on the front right below the Pair button
b. For Xbox Series S, the port is on the front left next to the Pair button
c. For Xbox One X and Xbox One S, the port is on the front under the Power Button
d. For original Xbox One, the port is on the left side of the console, around the corner from the disk tray
2) Instructions to install the update should appear automatically. Follow the instructions, and do not disconnect the cable while the update is in progress. The process may take around three minutes.
If the instructions to install don’t automatically appear, you can start the process manually. To do this:
Press the Xbox button to open the guide
a. Choose Profile & System > Settings > Devices & Connections > Controllers & Headsets
b. Select the controller you want to update

If there is still more dirt that is unable to be cleaned by this process and requires disassembly to reach, or if the buttons need to be replaced altogether, follow this guide.
