Power Loss/Interruption
When power loss occurs ventilation is immediately stopped. It will resume when AC or DC power is restored.
Electrical Power Interrupted During Use
If electrical power is disconnected during ventilation, an alarm will sound. First check that the power cord is plugged into a power source. Then, press the Alarm Control key to pause the audible portion of the alarm. Next, turn the ventilator power switch back on to resume ventilation. To stop ventilation, press and hold the Ventilation ON/OFF key for 3 seconds, and hold for 3 more seconds to confirm stop.
Battery Fully Drained During Use
If the battery is drained while the ventilator is running on it, ventilation will stop. To fix this, there are two methods. The first is to connect the ventilator to AC or DC power, which will turn the machine back on. The second is to replace the battery, as seen in this repair guide: Puritan Bennett 560 Internal Battery Replacement
Excessive Heat Released From Ventilator
The ventilator is releasing an unusually high amount of heat. This happens when the internal temperature of the device exceeds the tolerance range (> 60 degrees Celsius). May see the alarm message: HIGH INT TEMP COOL VENT
Air Inlet is Obstructed
Check the air inlet for any visible obstructions or blockages, and clear if necessary. Any large debris caught in the inlet could reduce the amount of airflow, leading to a buildup of heat. This may require removal of the Inlet Air Filter (see next step).
Inlet Air Filter is Clogged
If the air filter is overly dirty or clogged with debris, the amount of air flowing into the ventilator may be insufficient. Replace the inlet air filter using this guide. Puritan Bennett 560 Inlet Air Filter Replacement.
Turbine Not Functioning Properly
If the air inlet and filter are not causing the issue, there may be an issue with the turbine. A faulty turbine could generate excessive heat. Replace it by following Turbine Assembly Removal and Replacement in the PB560 Service Manual - Turbine Replacement, Section 5-39 to 5-41 (Pages 169-171).
LCD Panel Not Responding to Key Presses
The LCD panel does not update or respond to key presses. May see the alarm message: KEYBOARD FAULT RESTART / SRVC
The Software Lock is Locked
If the software lock is enabled (a key symbol appears in the upper left corner of the ventilator screen), you must disable it before you can view the technical fault log.
To unlock the ventilator software:
Simultaneously press and hold the UP or DOWN arrow keys for 3 seconds. The key symbol in the upper left corner of the display disappears, indicating that the software is unlocked.
The LCD Panel Cable is not Connected Properly
Ensure the LCD panel cable is connected properly to the CPU PCBA. If not, reconnect the cable.
Incorrect Voltage Flowing
Verify that the voltage across pins 21 (-) and 22 (+) of connector J17 on the CPU PCBA is 5V.
The Keypad Needs to be Replaced
The keypad could be damaged or malfunctioning. Replace it with the section titled Keypad Removal and Replacement in the service manual, Section 5-19 to 5-20 (Pages 149-150). PB560 Service Manual - Keypad Replacement.
The LCD Panel needs to be Replaced
The LCD Panel could be damaged or malfunctioning. Replace it with the section titled LCD Panel Removal and Replacement in the Service Manual, Section 5-26 to 5-28 (Pages 156-158). PB560 Service Manual - LCD Panel Replacment.
The CPU PCBA needs to be Replaced
The CPU could be damaged or malfunctioning. Replace it with the section titled CPU PCBA Removal and Replacement in the Service Manual, Section 5-22 to 5-26 (Pages 152-156). PB560 Service Manual - CPU PCBA Replacement.
Whistling Air Sound Coming From Ventilator
The ventilator is making an unusually loud whistling sound.
Air Inlet Filter is Missing
The air inlet filter may be missing, which could be the cause of the sound. Replace it with this guide Puritan Bennett 560 Inlet Air Filter Replacement.
Leaks in Oxygen Connector or Delivery Tube
Check for leaks in the oxygen connector or delivery tube. If there are leaks, you may need to replace the tie wraps, oxygen connector, or delivery tube. For instructions on replacing these, check out Section 5-51 to 5-52 (Pages 181-182) in the Service Manual. PB560 Service Manual - Oxygen Connector Replacement.
Faulty Turbine
If the filter has been replaced and there are no leaks, there may be an issue with the turbine. Replace it using the section titled Turbine Assembly Removal and Replacement in the Service Manual, PB560 Service Manual - Turbine Replacement, Section 5-39 to 5-41 (Pages 169-171).
Display is Dark or Off
The display is either very dark or entirely off, but the ventilator is powered on.
System Brightness or Contrast are Too Low
Adjust the display contrast and brightness. This would only be a potential issue with dark displays, not those that are completely off.
Device Below Operating Temperature
If the device is below the minimum operating temperature (5°C or 41°F), the display may turn off. If this is the case, move the ventilator to a warmer environment.
Keypad Cable Disconnected
If the keypad cable isn’t properly connected to the CPU PCBA, the display may not be receiving power or data. If this is the case, replug the cable into the PCBA.
LCD or PCBA Not Functioning
If the other troubleshooting steps didn’t work or don’t apply, the issue may be with a broken LCD display or CPU PCBA.
To replace the LCD display, check out section titled LCD Display Removal and Replacement in the Service Manual, Section 5-26 to 5-28 (Pages 156-158) PB560 Service Manual - LCD Display Replacement.
To replace the CPU PCBA, check out the section titled CPU PCBA Removal and Replacement in the Service Manual, Section 5-22 to 5-26 (Pages 152-156 PB560 Service Manual - CPU PCBA Replacement.
Other Alarms and Error Codes
If the ventilator is displaying an alarm or error code not described in the above troubleshooting page, try the official service manual PB560 Service Manual.
Table 4-2 shows the error codes (pages 4-10 to 4-12).
Table 4-3 shows the alarm messages (pages 4-14 to 4-30).
