Follow the steps below if your PlayStation 5 shuts off unexpectedly while in use. If your PS5 turns on but your TV or monitor displays no signal check out the PlayStation 5 Black Screen wiki instead.
HDMI Device Link
HDMI Device Link matches the power state of your PS5 with your TV. When you turn on your TV, the PS5 also turns on. If enabled, HDMI Device Link can sometimes inadvertently cause your PS5 to turn off. Turn off this feature and see if it fixes your issue.
- Select Settings > System > HDMI.
- Select HDMI Device Link and hit the X button on your DualSense controller to toggle it off.
Firmware Issues
Sometimes the PS5's system software causes the console to shut down. If this is the case, Sony will implement system updates that you need to download. It's always a good idea to keep your console updated with the latest firmware.
- Connect your PS5 to the internet.
- Select Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Select Update System Software.
- Select Update Using Internet.
- Select Update to begin updating your system.
If you cannot connect your console to the internet, you must update your console manually using a USB drive.
Rest Mode
If your console turns off after entering Rest Mode, even though you don't turn off the console yourself, you should turn off Rest Mode, allowing you to avoid the Rest Mode bug that prevents some PS5s from turning back on.
- To disable Rest Mode, select Settings > System > Power Saving.
- Select Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode and set the During Media Playback and While Playing Games options to Don't Put In Rest Mode.
The Power Supply is Not Powering the Console
The console is not receiving enough power from either the wall outlet or the power cord to stay on.
- Unplug the power cable. Wait at least a minute, check the cord for damage, and then plug it back into the PS5.
- If it is damaged or you aren't sure the cord works, try another power cord. The PS5 uses an IEC C7 power cable that came standard with the PS3 and PS4.
- Use a different wall outlet.
- It is possible the power supply is damaged and you may need to replace the power supply with a new one. Make sure the console is not overheating before repairing the power supply.
Overheating
Ensure your console has proper ventilation. The PS5 console may shut down if unable to cool components to avoid damaging its hardware.
- Turn off the console and wait at least one hour.
- Move the console to a well-ventilated location where there are no objects on or next to the console. Ensure that all of the vents are clear and have good airflow.
- Restart the console.
- If you still have trouble with ventilation, make sure the vents are clean. Use a vacuum to remove the dust from the dust catchers.
- You may need to clean or replace the fan with a new one.

PS5 shuts down after 30 to 60 minutes and won't power back on until I pull the power plug out then reconnect. It is completely unresponsive until I reseat the power plug, in which case it works normally again for another 30 to 60 minutes. Driving me crazy, not sure what to do. Literally same. Mine has been doing it for ages. The xbox never does it and I use the same plug outlet for them both so it isn't my electrics. I have tried every "fix" and none of them bloody work. I am fuming that I spent a grand on two ps5s and it happens to them both. None of the fixes actually work and I have an M.2 and external SSD which is going to end up permanently screwed because the PS5 is a pile of $@$*. I love the console but this development can seriously &&^& off. Can't even post on the PS5 reddit because it forces you to post it on their dead &&^&^$^ discord server to hide the negative posts from their main page. Absolute bullshit. Been on every playstation and they finally let me down big time. I sincerely hope they fix this issue or go bankrupt because this $@$* happens way too much for it to be a minor thing. Next generation my arse.

I thought I was the only one. I bought a 3 year protection plan through Walmart when I got it just in case and I’m glad I did. The only problem is that they want me to send it in for them to “fix” it. It’s gonna come back more damaged then before I sent it.

Same here can’t play any ps5 games, ps4 games don’t give me any trouble. I swear this problem ain’t our faults PlayStation need to give us new consoles cause obviously this is an internal problem. No troubleshoot work, PlayStation customer support sucks and I feel we got ripped off. Instead of fixing the issue they gonna make us buy another expensive console. I shipped off my console twice because of this issue and now it’s happening to me again for the third time. There’s no fix for this issue other than replacing these malfunctioning consoles with brand new ones.

Well.. I think I fixed the issue.. I have been playing god of war hard on my ps5 and no shut down.. The issue was my power supply had dust on the back of it and it seemed to make it overheat thats why i had no warning.. had to do a complete tear down of the system to get to it, but I was careful and did it organized it took about an hour and a half.. so far so good. .good luck

I took my console to best buy because I have the total tech support membership and they said that they will replace any PS5 that comes into their store with a brand new one if the original was purchased at best buy and malfunctions. This is because they are not certified to work on the consoles. The only issue is, there's not any availability for a new console. I had them blow out the entire system with their compressed air and the turning off problem ceased as of now. I hope it won't come back but have low hopes...

This happend to me and i got my ps5 on day release. Found that completly strpping it down and deepcleaning it solved the issue. The power supply was covered in dust resulting in overheating and shutting down. So il be making this a yearly thing now to stop it from happening again.

Don't give up dude.. it really wasn't that hard to fix.. grab some duster.. and take your time.. take step by step pictures so ya know how to put things back together.. working on these things can be intimidating.. but it really isn't that hard if ya go slow... mine has been working great ever sence I blew the ports out in the back of the power supply..

This has happened to me - and wasn't because of dust trapped in the fan. Overheating can cause the liquid metal used for cooling to leak out from its storage area, which can then freeze and damage other components. I sent it in for repair and got it back, worked fine for another 6-7 months. Now the exact same shutdown just happened while playing Gran Turismo (I had one minute left in an hour long race - just the worst timing).
Apparently this only happens when storing the console vertically. I just moved mine to horizontal position and really hope the crashes stop.

Okay so mine does the same thing. Only when on Warzone 2.0 any other game it's fine. Took my panels off and cleaned the fans and surrounding areas. Tried to play WZ and shut off again, after trying 2 more times I got fed up and left it off for 20 mins. Tried rebuilding database, still shuts off only with WZ. So today I will try and take it apart and clean everything. Then after I get it back on I'll let y'all know.

I'm relieved that this isnt some isolated issue. I've been playing the Witcher 3 (PS5) heavy! and the system has crashed completely at least 5 times. This is the only game its done that with aswell. Ive had the soft crashes in the past that just suspends the game but completely crapping out? This is no good.

Mine works fine with PS4 games, but as soon as I try and play PS5 game for about 5-10 it shuts off. I bought a replacement power supply and installed today and still doing it, so obviously not a power supply issue. Giving up at this point and just paying to send it to Sony. If it has any other issues after doing that I will be done with Sony. Which sucks cause i have had every system since PS1

I had this issue about 6 months ago, so I figured since it worked, I'd come back to post what I did. And it was simple... I just took the top plate off, the white one with the PS logo, cleaned it with canned air and left the plate off. Not one issue since. Hope this helps. The pos, whoops, ps doesn't look pretty with the top off, but it works. My guess is the fan doesn't pull enough air to keep it cool. I have thought about drilling holes in the plate where it sits next to the fan, just so I can put it back on, but haven't yet.
