PlayStation 5 Disc Drive Won't Work

If your PS5 is not accepting and taking in the disc you are trying to insert, the first thing you should do is ensure you are inserting the disc in the correct alignment.

If your PS5 is positioned horizontally:

1. Position yourself towards the disk drive slot.
2. The PS logo should be visible on the top of the console, and the disc drive should be on the lower left side of the console.
3. Insert the disc horizontally with the labeled side facing up.
4. If you don't see the PS logo on the top of the console and the disc drive is on the upper right side of the console, then the PS5 is upside down. You can either insert the disc with the labeled side facing down or correctly position the PS5 and insert the disc with the labeled side facing up.

If your PS5 is positioned vertically:

1. Position yourself towards the disk drive slot.
2. Insert the disc vertically with the labeled side facing left.

If the disc drive still does not accept the disc, then move on to the next steps.

It's possible someone inserted a disc without you realizing it, or you forgot. Ensure there is no disc inside the PS5 by pressing the eject button on the front of the console.

Restart the PS5 from Safe Mode to fix a software glitch if your PS5 is not taking, reading, or ejecting a disc:

1. Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps to open Safe Mode.
2. Connect the DualSense controller.
   • Note: You must plug in the controller to the console.
3. From the Safe Mode menu, select the 1st option, Restart PS5.

Perform a hard reset if restarting from Safe Mode did not fix the issue:

1. Turn off the PS5 by pressing the power button on the console.
2. Unplug the power cord and all other cords and devices from the PS5.
3. Wait 30 minutes.
4. Turn on the console.

Reset your PS5 if nothing has worked:

1. Note: Ensure the disc or disc drive isn't dirty or damaged before resetting your console and erasing your data. Follow the solutions given under Causes 4, 5, and 6 before performing this potential solution.
2. Press and hold the power button until you hear two beeps to open Safe Mode.
3. Connect the DualSense controller.
   • Note: You must plug in the controller to the console.
4. From the Safe Mode menu, select the 7th option, Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software).
5. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your System.

If you are still having problems, the disc could be the cause.

The disc drive's laser reader can't process dirty or damaged discs. Clean the disc that you can't get working:

1. Remove any dirt or prints with a soft and clean microfiber cloth.
2. Insert the clean disc.

If the disc still doesn't work, insert a different disc. If other discs don't work, there is an issue with the disc drive.

• Only use clean PS5 and PS4 game discs, Blu-ray discs, or DVDs. Burned discs and CDs will not work!

Debris or outside objects stuck inside the disc drive will prevent discs from being read, recognized, and ejected:

1. Use a compressed can of air or dust blower to clear debris inside the disc drive by blowing inside.
2. You may need to open up the PS5 to better access the disc drive and completely clean it.

If your PS5 doesn't read or recognize any discs, you must reset your PS5.

If your PS5 doesn't eject the disc, you can reset your PS5, but if that doesn’t work, you must perform the following steps to remove the disc manually.

The disc drive's ejection mechanism is unable to eject the stuck disc, so you must manually open and remove the disc:

1. Turn off the console.
2. Remove all cables and devices from the console.
3. Remove the vertical stand.
4. Place the console on a soft cloth on a flat surface and remove the base.
5. Position the console, so the PS logo is facedown, and the disc slot is on your left side.
6. Place your palms near the top corners and grip the edge of the cover. Gently pull the cover upwards toward yourself. You may hear a click.
7. Lift away the cover.
8. Look for black rings on the optical (disc) drive, including a circle of black plastic film.
9. Newer PS5s might not have this film. If your PS5 does, you can remove this film or push through it to reach the covered screw.
10. Using a #1 Phillips screwdriver, turn the screw CLOCKWISE until the disc is almost entirely visible.
11. Gently remove the disc.
    • Do not forcibly pull the disc!
12. Replace the bottom cover.
13. You hear an audible click when the cover is secured.
14. Reconnect all cables and turn on the console.
