Vacuum Will Not Turn On
I want to use my vacuum but it won’t turn on when I press the power button or it shuts off mid-use.
Vacuum Not Plugged In
Check to make sure you have attached the power cord of the vacuum to a wall plug.
Overheated Motor
If the vacuum cleaner stops working mid-use, this is because the vacuum motor has become overheated and the machine shut itself off as a safety procedure. If this occurs, let the vacuum rest for 1-3 hours, then come back and turn it on again for use.
Bad Wall Socket In Your House
A wall plug in your house might not be working. Try plugging the vacuum into a different wall plug.
Faulty Vacuum Cable
Wiggling the vacuum power cable may cause power to come back on. But this does imply that it is a bad power cable. Contacting the vacuum company is necessary if this happens.
Low Suction/ No Suction
When I turn the vacuum on it won’t pick up dirt or debris.
Dirt Cup Clogged Or Full
Try emptying the dirt cup into a waste receptacle.
Clogged Hose
Check hose and brush roll for obstructions.
Use a long object such as dowel or ruler to push debris through suction hose.
Dirty Filter
Rinsable filter or HEPA filter is dirty, clean the filter with water or replace HEPA filter.
*NOTE: DO NOT WASH FILTER MADE WITH HEPA MATERIAL!
Link to replace filter guide
Automatic Brush Roll Shut-off Engaged
Press automatic brush roll shut-off switch twice.
Broken Or Damaged Belt
Belt connecting brush roll to vacuum is damaged or broken.
Link to replacement belt guide
Part: Hoover Belt Part #562535001
Tools Required: Phillips head screwdriver
Body And Handle Won’t Recline
The cleaner is stuck at just one position or the handle would not recline as much as it used to.
Vacuum Head not Pressed Down
Make sure the vacuum head is held fixed on the ground using your feet while pulling the handle to adjust its position.
Object Stuck At The Hinge
Look for any blockage around the hinge that connects the cleaner head and the vacuum handle. An object such as pencil stuck at the hinge might be preventing the unit from reclining further.
Faulty Upright Lock
Look for any blockage around the hinge that connects the cleaner head and the vacuum handle. A pencil stuck at the hinge might be preventing the unit from reclining further. Check if something is stuck by the upright lock. If it is broken, the part will have to be replaced.
Part: Hoover Lock #440004075
Tools Required: Allen Wrench Screwdriver
Making Loud Noise
The vacuum makes a strange or loud noise whenever it is turned on.
Clogged Hose
If the vacuum is making a whistling noise, the hose of the vacuum may be clogged with dirt or debris. Use a moist paper towel and/or a long object such as a dowel or a ruler to clean away any obstructions.
Part: Hose
Tools Required: Moist paper towel, long object
If unclogging the hose does not resolve the issue, the hose itself may be torn or ripped and replacement may be required.
Clogged Motor Filter
There may be a buildup of debris in the motor filter. This can be accessed by unscrewing the back panel on the bottom of the vacuum. Once panel is removed, pull out the motor filter and wash with water.
*Warning: Allow filter to completely dry before reinserting into compartment!
Part: Motor Filter
Tools Required: Phillips head screwdriver, Water
Solid Debris Inside Dirt Cup
If the vacuum is making a rattling noise, you may have simply sucked up a solid piece of debris such as a small stone. Remove the dirt cup and empty contents into a waste receptacle.
Part: Dirt Cup
Tools Required: None
Brush Roll Will Not Spin
When operating the vacuum, the primary brush roll is not spinning.
The Brush Roll Switch Is Turned To “Off”
Make sure the switch is pushed into the “on” position. If it is in the on position, switch to off and then back to on.
The Brush Roll Is Clogged
Physically inspect the brush roll for debris that may be clogging it and preventing it from spinning like hair or string. Remove the material.
The Brush Roll Doesn’t Work
The brush roll may no longer be functional. If the above steps don’t resolve the problem try unplugging the unit for 30 minutes and then try again. If the problem is still unresolved you probably need to Replace the Brush roll (link to replacement guide for brush roll).
Dust Escapes Vacuum
When using the vacuum dust is escaping and getting blown out.
Dirt Cup Is Full
Dust may escape if the dirt cup is full. Empty the dirt cup and see if the issue persists.
The Brush Roll Is Clogged
Physically inspect the brush roll for debris that may be clogging it and preventing it from spinning like hair or string. Remove the material.
Parts: None
Tools required: None, gloves recommended
Dirt Cup Not Installed Correctly
If the dirt cup is not properly seated dust may escape. Ensure the dirt cup is properly installed by removing the cup and then placing the bottom on the dirt cup into the body of the vacuum first, then pivot the cup into the vacuum. You should hear and feel a click. If the dirt cup doesn’t fit or click into place you may need to buy a replacement dirt cup.
Parts: Hoover Dirt Cup- part no. 440004067 (if required)
Tools required: None
Filter Missing Or Not Properly Installed
If the filter is not installed properly, or is missing altogether, then dust may escape while the vacuum is in use. See our Filter Replacement Guide for instructions on how access and check the filter. You may need to replace the filter if it is old or damaged.
Part: Primary Filter Assembly- part no. 303903001 (if required)
Tools required: None

any chance you’d be open to helping troubleshoot an issue not mentioned here? my hoover windtunnel air steerable upright is having issues with the air flow. when i open ‘hose mode’ valve the air spins in the dirt cup as it’s supposed to, but when i close that and use the standard floor mode the air stops spinning and sounds as though there’s nowhere for air to escape. i’ve cleaned out all the hoses and pulled apart the vacuum as much as i can, but i just can seem to see an issue. any thoughts on what might be causing this issue? thanks! :)

I am having that exact problem! How do I fix it?
Megan Hall -
My issue with this vacuum is that the debris that is sucked up winds up on top of the air filter and not in the dirt cup where it’s suppose to be.
Chuck Kalb - crwdns2934203:0crwdne2934203:0
Chuck, I’m having the same issue with my Hoover Windtunnel, did you ever find a solution to fix the issue? If you can share your experience in fixing the problem, that would be awesome. Thanks.
Jose Blanco
Jose Blanco -
Same here. And I just replaced both filters to no avail!
Jessica McCauley -
Same! Anyone find a solution???

That is the culprit - the rubber gasket missing from bottom of red tube in the debris canister. So far no luck in finding the part. I can only imagine how many of these have been tossed with their gasket intact :(. If anyone has that part to spare for a reasonable sum, I would be grateful. netlady383@yahoo.com
lisa j -
I had the same problem. Lisa J is correct - the rubber gasket at bottom of red tube in the debris canister. In my case, the gasket wasn’t missing, but had been pushed up the red plastic tube, preventing it forming a seal with the bottom of the canister. Moving the gasket down (and applying glue to prevent future slippage) fixed the problem.

I have a Hoover Windtunnel upright where the power cord is simply put unmanageable and can't be easily coiled manually. It easily gets tangled.
Is this a common problem?

Every time I turn on my Vacuum, I have to take off the head place my hand over the hose until the RED LIGHT goes off. The suction is the worst I have ever had in a vacuum. I have been a 35 year client of Hoover and always recommend Hoover to my friends but that will now stop. This vacuum costs $300 plus with tax and has to be the worst purchase ever. I also bought it at Canadian Tire, tried to return it only to be told, it must go back to Hoover directly. So, HOOVER...what can you do or recommend now?????
mcgloin3809 - crwdns2934203:0crwdne2934203:0
My issue with this vacuum is the same as Kalb, Blanco, and McCauley above. :….the debris that is sucked up, winds up on top of (the canister UNDER the primary) air filter and not in the dirt cup where it’s suppose to be.” When I remove the cyclone, I also find the individual cyclone ports and the red tube FULL OF pet hair and dirt. So I tap and blow until clean. I have also replaced BOTH the primary air intake filter and the on-top-of-the-motor HEPA exhaust filter but problem reoccurs. About ready to call Hoover tech support but no clear reason why this happens. Great vac when it works. Can tell primary air filter collecting debris when zero swirling air-filled pet ahir at bottom of canister. So have to stop the vac, clean bottom of primary air filter, tap/blow out cyclone part, and reassemble. Getting old. Thanks.
papa joe - crwdns2934203:0crwdne2934203:0
Hi Papa Joe. I had my hubby tinker with mine and now it works better. In my case, it appears the issue was the gray rubber seal at the bottom of the red tube thing in the canister section was not touching the bottom of the dirt cup. On the bottom door of the dirt cup, there is a depression in it that comes upward. Check yours and see if the gray seal is sitting flush on the bottom. I hope this helps you. I was ready to put mine at the street.

Thanks for prompt response on this Jessica. I’ll check to see if makes a difference . I noticed the rubber gasket seemed a little too flexible, easily coming off the end of the red tube on our few-year old Hoover Windtunnel model UH72400. Will order one since found a parts website w/ diagram of each part and assembly. https : // www. Parts warehouse .com / UH72400-Air-Steerable-Bagless-Upright-s / 6361 .htm Part #42. (I think to post this, I had to break apart the web site address – kept getting iFixit “your message in Spam” emails.) The deteriorated or weak rubber seal could explain the erratic behavior when the swirling debris-filled-air occurs in the canister and when doesn’t. Would have thought a gap should exist to allow debris-air to escape into the canister btwn the gray rubber seal at bottom of red tube and bottom of dirt canister. But perhaps needs to sealed and why kind of springy to create a proper back pressure for suction through the cyclone part.

I am having same problem as Jose Blanco . Sure would like some tech help. I do not want to buy another vacuum if this is a simple repair.
Richard wolfe - crwdns2934203:0crwdne2934203:0
Hi Richard. Did you try looking at what I wrote to Papa Joe above? See if the gray rubber seal at the bottom of the red tube touches the bottom of the dirt cup. It has to make a seal or it will suck the dirt into the tube and get stick in the filter.

Hi, the foot of our vacuum all of a sudden stopped staying in the down position. It will raise off the floor by about 15 degrees and makes cleaning impossible. When we open the flap with the stop sign on it the foot lowers back down but immediately raises again when the flap is closed. Seems like there is too much suction which is causing the problem but not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

My Hoover air cordless has worn out contacts where the dirt canister connects to the body of the vacuum. Is there any way to replace or fix the worn out contacts? If I put a little bit of saliva on the contacts there’s enough of a connection to make the vacuum work but once it dries up it turns off again.

My Hoover Air roller brush stopped spinning. Vacuum store said replace roller but….I took off the cover (2 plastic clips) and took out/off the brush from the belt. Note that BOTH ends of the roller should SPIN freely!
Mine had only one free spinning end (the belt end) and it looked like the end that was NOT spinning was seized up. It looked melted!… and hard as nails. I soaked the NON SPINNING brush end in water overnight. Then I carefully pried off that cap end with a teeny screw driver. After much cleaning of the cap end with a dental pick lo and behold there was a bearing! Cleaned under the bearing too and you can’t believe how much dust/hair came out. Put some WD40 under the bearing and it spun freely. I re-seated the cap onto the brush.
I Replaced the brush into the vacuum….you have to seat it into the SQUARE slots on the vacuum, then replace the cover. IF THE COVER seems that it doesn’t fit…take it off and roll the ends of the brush until they fit down into the SQUARE slots.

DUST ESCAPES VACUUM: My vacuum repair store said it’s supposed to as it’s built that way so if you don’t want dust spitting out toward your feet, turn OFF the brush.

Mine does the same thing, all dirt goes to the filter and not the cup, seems like this is a common problem with nobody responding with any answers.

Christopher, how did you remove the hose? I’ve been trying to do that because I think I have debris stuck in there, but I can’t find any way to remove the hose. Any help appreciated.

I found that the debris was collecting inside the elbow that the hose connects to, it wasn’t even getting to the hose. Use a pair of needle nose plyers to pull it out.

to question: vacuum will not turn on
The removable dirt cup section, has 3 metal connectors… that contact with the 3 metal connectors on the vacuum’s main handle. (you’ll see this once you take off the dirt cup section.
After a time of use these connectors don’t contact properly.
On the dirt cup section, you can carefully take a screw driver and adjust ‘out’ the connectors so that contact is better. I’ve done this multiple times per year and it works every time for awhile, then needs doing again.

I had the same problem that the dirt was not going into the canister but wound up under the top air filter on my Hoover upright wind tunnel model UH72405 (any over model close to this one also). After checking every possibility of a clog I read a response from someone what the problem was, I was missing the rubber gasket at the end of the red tube in the canister. My wife by mistake pulled it off while cleaning the out the inside of the canister. I searched the internet for the gasket part # 562621001 to no avail so I google 1 1/4 in flared gasket and Grainger had one. The item number is 22UR72 and is made for urinals!! Anyhow, it cost me under $3 and it worked. The only thing is instead of the rubber gasket going over the end of the red tube I had to insert it inside the tube but to make it fit tighter I tapped the smaller end with some thin insulation tape and cut away the piece that was too tall, now all the dirt goes into the canister.
