Touchpad is dirty or damaged
Dirt, food, and sebum(oil from skin) can cause the trackpad to not register your finger. Damage from scratches or other forms of damage may also cause the Trackpad to misregister/not register inputs. Some ways you can clean the Touchpad are by using: a tissue, alcohol wipe, slightly damp cloth, microfiber cloth, or soft brush can be used to help clean the track pad (be cautious and do not let liquid get in the seams of the Touchpad as this may cause swelling). In the case that the touch pad is dented or fully damaged, the best bet would be to fully replace the touchpad.
Touchpad has been turned off in settings
Sometimes the Touchpad may be automatically turned off if an external mouse or Trackpad is connected. To check, go to settings and search “Touchpad” to check if it is on.
“Snap to” setting is on
“Snap to” could have been activated, and may be preventing you from moving your Cursor/Touchpad on certain sites and applications. Go to settings and search for “Touchpad”. Under the Touchpad settings, there will be a “more Touchpad settings” option. Clicking it should take you to “Mouse properties”. Under “Mouse properties”, click “Pointer options” and make sure “Snap to” is off.
Mouse is frozen
If possible, try connecting an external mouse. If the Pointer/Cursor moves with your mouse, you will know it is a touch/trackpad issue. If the Pointer/Cursor remains frozen, it may be a “Screen Freezing” issue.
Check to make sure other devices or operators are not connected
Being connected to another device can prevent your Touchpad from registering on your computer.
- Make sure your computer is not wirelessly connected to another mouse, external track pad, keyboard, or controller via Bluetooth.
- Check who has administrator access to your computer (windows). You can check by clicking the “windows” + “R” keys at the same time. Next, a pop up called “run” will appear on your screen. Type in “netplwiz”. Under “user accounts” there should only be one listed name/administrator. If there is more than one listed name/administrator, there is a chance your laptop is being controlled remotely by another person or organization. Delete the account that is not yours (make sure the account is not your own! Accidentally deleting your own administrator account may prevent your ability to update, download applications, and perform other actions to your HP laptop).
Restart or Power off your laptop for 3-5 minutes
Having a laptop on or in sleep mode for long periods of time may affect the device's general ability to run. Giving it some time off may allow it to catch up, update, and give the laptop a chance to cool off.
Trackpad Failure
If all other potential causes for the cursor being frozen or not moving has been ruled out, the trackpad may be faulty and may require replacement. Follow this guide to replace your trackpad.
