Peripheral Issue
Sometimes a faulty input device, especially an external one, can make it seem like the screen is frozen, when it’s actually just not responding to input. Here are some steps you can take to help identify if the input device is causing the issue:
- Test the built-in input devices:
- Begin by using the mouse and keyboard to see if the screen responds.
- Switch to the laptop's built-in input device:
- If using an external input device, try switching to the laptop’s built-in input device to check for a response.
- Check if the external device is the issue:
- If the screen responds to the built-in input device but not the external one, the external device may be the issue.
- Determine if the system is frozen:
- If both the built-in and the external input device are non-responsive, the program or device may be not responding.
Program Not Responding
A non-responsive program can sometimes be mistaken for a frozen screen. In order to determine whether the issue is a non responsive program or another issue causing the freeze, follow these steps:
- Open the Start menu and reveal the taskbar:
- Press the Windows key to open the Start menu and reveal the taskbar, which can help confirm if the system is still responsive.
- Try closing the program:
- Try closing the program by going to the taskbar, hovering over the program’s icon, right-clicking with the trackpad, and then selecting the Close window.
- Open Task Manager if needed:
- If the program is still unresponsive to this, go to the taskbar, right-click with the mouse in the empty part of the taskbar, and open the Task Manager.
- End the non-responsive task:
- Go to the processes tab and select the non-responsive program from the list and click End Task.
Graphics Driver Malfunctioning
If the screen becomes frozen, the graphics driver may be malfunctioning. To reset it without restarting the computer:
- Graphics driver reset shortcut:
- Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B at the same time. This shortcut will try to reset the graphics driver without having to restart the computer.
- Indication of Success:
- You will know if the shortcut worked if the screen flickers for a second and there is a beep.
System Not Responding
If after trying the other troubleshooting steps did not work, the entire system may be not responding. If that’s the case, you should follow these steps to address the issue:
- Force shutdown/reboot the device:
- Press and hold the power button until the device powers off.
- Power on the Device:
- Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to power the device back on.
If the issue persists even after following all the steps, it may be hardware related. Refer to the hardware replacement guides.
