If your Dell Latitude 5580 battery does not charge or display the charging signal when you attempt to charge it, follow this troubleshooting guide for possible solutions.
Damaged AC Adapter
The most common cause as to why a Dell Latitude 5580 won't charge is because of a faulty adapter. Additionally, many Dell laptops won't charge unless the adapter that's being used is a Dell adapter. If possible, try a different Dell adapter. Plug it into your laptop and check if there is any improvement with the charging status. If another adapter works, this means that your first adapter is damaged. If you don't have another adapter, consider the following:
- Remove anything else that may be plugged into your laptop and try a different outlet. Ensure that your charging source works effectively by plugging something else into the outlet.
- Unplug your adapter from the charging source and/or the laptop and inspect it for any damage. This could look like fraying, bent, or exposed cables. It would be beneficial to unplug the cable from the adapter brick and checking for any damage there as well.
- If your adapter has an LED, observe whether or not it stays on while plugged in. If it isn't on or is flickering, this could indicate that it is damaged.
- If you are using an adapter that isn't specified as Dell, this could be the problem. If it is a Dell adapter and still isn't working, it might be time to replace it with a new one.
- Check your adapter status with BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System. To do this, turn on and restart your laptop while your adapter is plugged in. When the Dell logo appears, repeatedly press the F2 key on the keyboard to enter BIOS. Click on the "Overview" tab and find the "Power" section. There, you should find "AC Adapter Status". This will show the wattage for your adapter. If it says "Unknown", this could indicate that the adapter is the reason why your laptop won't charge. You can exit BIOS by clicking on the "Exit" to restart your laptop.
If there seems to be nothing wrong with your adapter and your laptop still isn't charging, this could mean you have a faulty charging port.
Faulty Port
The signs of a damaged charging port (DC Jack) could be that the adapter may not fit correctly in the port. It might be wobbly or a bit loose. Additionally, your adapter may overheat while plugged in. Your charging port may also display signs of damage, such as corrosion or bent pins. Fixing the DC Jack is fairly simple and could fix the problem.
- First, check that the charging port is free from debris. Ensure that your laptop is not plugged in while attempting to repair the port.
- Unscrew and remove the Access Door, or bottom panel. This would be the bottom of the laptop.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Unscrew and remove the metal bracket and DC Jack.
- When installing the new port, insert the port into the slot, place the bracket back on, tighten the screw, then reinsert the battery and Access Door.
Faulty Battery
Your battery may refuse to charge if it's damaged or near the end of its life. You can check the status of your battery by accessing the BIOS. To do this, turn your laptop off and back on. When the Dell logo appears, repeatedly press the F2 key on the keyboard to enter BIOS. From there, look for the "General" or "Advanced" tab and select "Battery Status" to view your battery's status. If the battery status is not the issue, attempt reseating your battery. You can do this with the following steps:
- Turn off your laptop and disconnect adapter.
- Remove the Access Door on the bottom of the laptop, then disconnect and remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for 20 seconds.
- Reinsert battery and Access Door.
- Reconnect the adapter.
If these steps do not prove useful, you will need to replace your battery with a new one. Once you've obtained a new battery, follow this battery replacement guide to replace your Dell Latitude 5580 battery.
Outdated BIOS
If you've tried all of the above and find that your laptop still isn't charging, you may need to update the Basic Input/Output system for the Dell Latitude 5580. To check if you need to update, you can do this by visiting Dell Support and clicking on "Support". Enter the service tag of the laptop, then click on "Drivers & Downloads". Under "Find Drivers", select and download the latest BIOS file for the laptop.
