When your computer is having trouble saving/reading files or starting programs, it may be an problem with your storage (SSD/hard drive). If your computer is having trouble running multiple applications, then it may be a problem with your RAM.
Low or Slow RAM
Usually, slowdowns relating to RAM issues manifest when your computer is trying to run multiple programs at once. This can be identified by applications freezing for a moment; these freezes are also known as "stutters." If this is your issue, you may need to install more RAM or upgrade existing RAM. This procedure is relatively quick and is described here: (placeholder to future repair guide).
Slow Storage
Usually, slowdowns related to storage manifest during device or program start-up. If your device takes a long time to boot-up or programs take a long time to start, it may be worth investing in an SSD if your device only has a hard drive. If your device already has an SSD, then upgrading to a faster one could improve performance.
SSDs (Solid State Drives) are significantly faster than hard drives and are generally considered an easy way to boost performance.
A guide to installing/replacing an SSD can be found here: (placeholder to future repair guide).
Slow due to Overheating
Laptops are also prone to overheating which can hurt performance. To help diagnose if this is a potential issue, please see the following guide: Dell Latitude 5490 Laptop is Running Hot (Overheating)
