Air Flow Blocked or Weak
If you can hear the fan running, but the air flow feels weak or nonexistent, you may need to clean the exhaust vents or replace the fan. If this is your issue, you will notice the following:
- Little to no air coming from the exhaust vents (these are located on the back of the Dell Latitude 5490 laptop).
- Dust build-up around exhaust vents.
- Excessive fan noise.
If this is the case, you should try to clean the vents or fan. You may need to open up the device or even remove the fan and heatsink assembly for cleaning, for a guide to this procedure please see (placeholder to future repair guide).
Faulty Fan
If your Dell Latitude 5490 laptop is repeatedly thermal throttling due to overheating, you will notice the following:
- High internal temperature. Your computer will be hot to the touch.
- Fan running constantly or loudly.
- Random shutdowns/restarts when overheating.
- Performance drops when overheating.
If you notice any of these symptoms, then you may need to clean your computer's exhaust vents and cooling systems. You may also need to replace the thermal paste, or in extreme cases replace the heatsink and/or fans. For a guide to removing the fan and heatsink assembly, please see (placeholder to future repair guide).
