Bose QuietComfort 45 Troubleshooting
The Bose QuietComfort 45 is a noise cancelling headphone model that was released on September 23, 2021. Its model number is 845217-0100.
Bluetooth Connection Failure
Incorrect Bluetooth settings
- Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices.
- Make sure that both the headphones and the device that you want to connect to are not already connected to other devices.
- The device you are trying to connect to may not support Bluetooth connection for Bose QuietComfort 45 headphones.
Bluetooth out of range or obstructed
- Bluetooth range for the headphones is 30ft (9m).
- Walls, pockets, and other materials between the headphones and connected device may affect the range.
- Other wireless devices in the area may also have an effect on Bluetooth range.
Firmware out of date
- Make sure your Bose QuietComfort 45 headphones are running the most recent firmware. You may check and update it using the Bose Music App or Bose Software Updater for computers.
Simple system error
- Devices will occasionally run into small errors that can be corrected by resetting the device.
- Reset both devices to fix these possible errors.
- To reset the headphones (Steps provided by Bose website):
- Connect a USB charging cable to the right earcup.
- Slide the Power/Bluetooth switch right and hold it while connecting the other end of the USB charging cable to a USB wall charger.
- Once connected, release the switch to reset the headphones.
Stalled while connecting to device
If the device says “Connecting to [device]...” (voice prompts must be enabled for it to say this) then it has found a device and it is trying to connect.
- Try clearing headphone list of previously connected devices.
- Slide the power button to the right and hold it for 15 seconds. The headphones should then have the voice prompt “Bluetooth device list cleared. Ready to connect.”
Try connecting the headphones to another device to be sure it isn’t the device that is not working.
- If the headphones connect to this new device, it may be a problem with the device you are trying to connect to and not the headphones.
Faulty Bluetooth Chip
- If none of the previous solutions work, the Bluetooth chip may need to be replaced. The device page will have a guide soon.
No Audio in One Earphone
Loose or damaged cable
Check the cable. Make sure that the cable connecting the headphones to your device is properly inserted and not damaged. Try wiggling the cable gently to see if the audio comes back on. If the cable is damaged, you may need to replace it.
A loose or damaged cable may cause one of the earcups to lose audio.
Volume balance settings
Your device may have volume balance settings that are not evenly distributed between the two channels. Adjust volume balance settings Check the volume balance settings on your device to make sure that they are evenly distributed between the two channels. Adjust the settings if necessary.
Try connecting the headphones to another device to see if the issue persists. If the issue is resolved, the problem may be with your original device's headphone jack.
Faulty headphone jack
A faulty headphone jack on your device may prevent audio from reaching one of the earcups. Clean the headphone jack: Use a can of compressed air or a soft-bristled brush to clean out the headphone jack on your device, in case there is any dust or debris that is interfering with the audio signal.
Device Suddenly Stopped Working Shortly After Purchase
Dead battery
The headphones may not be turning on because the battery is dead or not properly charged. Make sure that the headphones are properly charged by connecting them to a power source using the included USB-C cable. Allow the headphones to charge for at least 2 hours before trying to turn them on again.
Bluetooth connectivity issues
Reset the headphones by following these steps:
- Turn off the headphones by pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds.
- Wait for the power indicator light to turn off.
- Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to turn the headphones back on.
- Try connecting the headphones to your device via Bluetooth. The headphones may not be connecting properly to your device via Bluetooth.
Software issues
There may be a software issue causing the headphones to malfunction. Update the firmware: Make sure that the headphones are running the latest firmware by visiting the Bose website and downloading any available updates. Follow the instructions provided to update the firmware.
If these solutions do not work, please contact Bose customer support for further assistance.
Battery Loses Charge Quickly
Weak battery life compared to the battery life promised by the manufacturer.
Firmware out of date
Make sure your Bose QuietComfort 45 headphones are running the most recent firmware. You may check and update it using the Bose Music App.
ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) is draining power
The ANC feature can consumer up to 20-30% more battery power. If you are not in an extremely noisy environment, consider reducing the ANC level or turning it off completely.
EQ (Equalizer) settings need adjusting
The EQ adjustments can have an impact on battery life. Because a lower EQ setting consumes less power, try decreasing the bass or treble levels to see if it improves battery life.
Bluetooth range
Reduce the Bluetooth range if you are not using your headphones in a broad area or far away from your smartphone to preserve power. This is possible using the Bose Music app.
Headphones need a reset
If everything else fails, reset your headphones. Turn off the headphones, then hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds, or until the Light blinks white. When you've reset the headphones, see if the battery life has increased.
No Audio or Distorted Audio
Audio jack is damaged
If you are hearing a lot of static while using the audio jack to connect to a device for sound, the audio jack may be damaged.
To be sure that this is a problem with the audio jack, try listening with Bluetooth to see if the same issue occurs. If the same issue occurs the problem is not with the audio jack.
Check to see if the headphones work with another device using the audio jack. If they do, then it is likely a problem with the original device that the headphones were connected to.
If the audio jack is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
Audio cord is damaged
Try testing if the audio cord works with another set of devices. If it does, than the static may be caused from a faulty or damaged audio jack.
If the audio cord is damaged, a replacement one will be needed.

For most applications my Bose QuietComfort 45s work great (making phone calls w/ my iPhone, listening to YouTube, to name two). But it stubbornly refuses to work during Teams calls -- which was the main reason I bought them. When I do a test call in Teams, the diagnosis is always that the microphone isn't working. I'm sure it isn't a problem with the microphone in the headphones (there are those phone calls). And I know Teams works just fine using the built-in microphone and speaker in my laptop. The laptop doesn't need restarting (I've tried -- it doesn't help). The firmware in the headphones is new. So, by process of elimination, I think the problem may lie with Teams. The Teams settings are correct (Bose QC45 for both speakers and microphone), but for some reason it just doesn't want to play nice. Any suggestions?

Are you using Bluetooth when you connect to your PC? The microphone on this headset only works with Bluetooth so if you try to plug in with the audio jack it won't work unfortunately.

Nicholas -- yes, Bluetooth is enabled on my laptop and my phone, and I'm able to pair the Bose QC45 to both devices without difficulty. The headphones work perfectly well in every application I've tried them with except for Teams. FWIW, a Microsoft tech support person I spoke to last week offered what was, to me, a somewhat alarming comment: he told me that the only Bose Bluetooth headphones that Microsoft has "certified" for Teams is the NC 700. That struck me as a BS comment, because their software shouldn't drive Bluetooth standards -- it should conform to them. I don't think they have any business "certifying" hardware like that. And the Bose QC45 does meet the Bluetooth SIG standards. I simply do not understand why I am having this problem.
Any Teams mavens out there want to take a crack at explaining this?

My headphones stopped charging. I bought a new cable but that's not doing the trick.

ANC cannot be turned off while music is playing. Tapping, double tapping only pauses music and stated AWARE for about 1 second and then music starts to play again in QUIET mode. Holding the ANC button down does nothing.
Is this normal or defect in these headphones? This doesn't seem like a proper function.
