The Basics
- Check for signs of power: Press and hold the power button to try and turn the phone on. This includes notification sounds, lights, vibration/haptic feedback, or other responses when pressing the buttons.
- Ensure your phone is fully charged: Connect it a known good charger and let it charge for at least 30 minutes, even if it doesn’t show any activity. The battery might be completely drained.
- Try a forced restart: Some phones have a unique method. Press and hold the power and volume down buttons for 10-15 seconds. Alternatively, some devices require holding the power and volume up buttons. If you notice any signs of life, but still have a black screen, jump to the Software Issue section, and move from there.
- Check your Brightness Settings: Adjust the brightness (if the screen flickers faintly). Some devices with OLED screens may appear “off” when brightness is very low.
Dirt/Debris are preventing your phone from functioning
Solution: Clean your phones buttons and charging port
If your phone isn't being used, then it's typically living in your pocket or purse. Often times this can cause bits of dust or debris to build up along the buttons and even in the charging port. This can prevent your phone from turning on, or charging normally.
- Wipe down the exterior of your phone: Dirt and other grime can build up on your phone. Wipe down the exterior of your phone gently with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with a 50/50 mix of water and isopropyl alcohol.
- Clean your phone's charging port: Lint, dust, or corrosion in the port can block the electrical connection and slow down charging. Try cleaning your charging port.
Software Issue
Solution: Attempt to boot your phone into Safe Mode
Android Safe Mode and Android Recovery Mode are diagnostic tools that can allow you to boot into a malfunctioning Android device with only the essentials that are needed to uninstall user installed apps, and clear problimatic cached data.
Enabling these modes can very depending on the type of phone you have. These are the most common modes for entering Safe Mode and Recovery Mode, but be sure to look up the method for entering these modes for your specific phone.
- How to boot into Safe Mode: Long-press the Power Button for a few seconds until the phone turns off. Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds, then press and hold the Volume Down button until your phone boots into Safe Mode.
- How to boot into Recovery Mode: Long-press the Power Button for a few seconds until the phone turns off. Press and hold the Power Button and the Volume Down key. When the device flashes on you should see a bunch of information about your device, and Start at the top of the screen.
If the screen remains black in either mode, this points to a hardware display issue rather than software.
Hardware Issues

- Inspect your Screen for Physical Damage: Drops, impacts, or exposure to moisture can damage display connectors or logic board components. Look for visible cracks, screen separation, or liquid damage indicators. If your phone was liquid damage consider looking at our Electronics Water Damage Wiki, and while it's made origonally for iPhones, our iPhone Liquid Damage Guide.
- Look for any loose connections: If your phone recently fell, there’s a chance the connection between your phone’s screen and motherboard might be loose. You’ll need to a guide for your specific phone and open it to check for any loose connections. It might also be benificial to reseat the connection for your phone's display.
- Replace the Screen: If you find that reseating the display hasn't fixed the issue, then the display itself could be faulty. Try replacing the screen and test if their is any change in the issue.
- Look for any Damage to the Motherboard: In some cases, a logic board issue may be preventing display output. Look for any burnt or damaged components. If their are components that are damaged, then the board itself might need to be replaced unless you have soldering skills.
