Acer Aspire Won't Power On
Having issues with your laptop powering on?
No Battery Detection
Check to make sure your battery pack is attached correctly, if not, follow our guide in reverse order to install it correctly. If this does not fix the problem, you should make sure there are no bent pins where the battery is placed.
The battery may also be undetectable due to the laptop internal connections. If this is the case, it would be best if you start looking for a new laptop.
Drained/Bad Battery
If your battery is connected correctly, but has no charge, plug in the power cord to charge the battery. Wait a few seconds after plugging it in to make sure current is flowing, and then turn on your laptop. To see if the battery is holding charge, remove the power plug after about 20 minutes and restart the computer. If it restarts correctly then the battery is holding a charge. If not, follow our guide to replace the battery.
No Indicator Light
If you know the battery works then take it out, and hold down the power button for 20 seconds (tip from Acer website). Next put the battery back in and plug in the power cord. The orange charging light should turn on. Once the blue charged light comes on, try to turn on your laptop. If this still does not work you may need to replace the motherboard.
Display Issues
Computer Showing only a Black Screen
If your computer is only showing a black screen when you start you may have a virus. You will need to run malware software unless you do not need the data that is stored on your laptop. If this is the case, you can start your laptop and continue tapping the F8 key. A menu should come up and select REPAIR. Click ok and next until you get to a screen where you choose RECOVERY MANAGEMENT . This will restore your computer to factory defaults, but it will delete all of your data.
Broken Display
If your indicator light is turned on and your battery is detected and charged, then it may be possible that your display is broken.
Overheating
Too Many Programs Running
The laptop can often overheat because it is being overworked. To check if this is the case, close any open programs, and restart the laptop. Wait a few minutes and if the noise of the fan decreases then your problem is solved. If your laptop overheats and turns off without the fan turning on try the following solutions.
Fan Not Functioning
This is often the most common cause for overheating.
First you should check if this is the case. To do this, turn off the laptop, flip it over, and then turn it back on. If you don't hear the fan start working this mean the fan processor is not functioning and you will need to replace it.
Clogged Fan Processor
The fan may get clogged and stop functioning due to a collection of dust. To fix this first unplug all cables and remove the plastic cover. Blow compressed air into the fan and remove all the dust. Place the cover back on and reconnect all cables.
Note: To avoid this, place your laptop on hard surfaces to allow air from the fan to properly ventilate.
Volume Control Problems
Check if your volume is muted by right clicking on the speaker icon in the bottom right hand corner of the task bar and dragging the volume control up or unchecking the mute button.
If that does not fix the problem, right click on the speaker icon and go to the advanced options. This will bring up a speaker user interface which can be modified to specific speaker settings. Make sure ‘laptop speakers’ are selected as the speaker option and accept or apply all changes made.
Another possible problem could be your sound drive or sound card which may need replacing or updating of the driver for the card.
Performance Issues/Slow Computer
RAM Issues
If your computer is slow and having trouble performing it might be a RAM issue. To check this go to task manager and select the Performance tab. This will show you your memory usage. If your memory is full, first restart your computer and this should restart your memory.
If your memory is still full it may be necessary replace the RAM.
Hard Drive Full
If the entire space of your hard drive is full, your computer will pull up documents slower, and the overall speed and performance of your processors will decrease. You can check the used space of your hard drive by clicking on the computer tab in the control panel or documents page. Then at the bottom it will display how much memory has been used and how much ‘free space’ you have left on your hard drive. If the hard drive is full you may need to remove programs and documents or you may be required to replace it with a larger Hard Drive.
CD/DVD Reading Problems
The Optical Drive reads CD’s and DVD’s for your computer to display them. Some common issues may include unable to read the disk, problems closing optical drive, and getting small items stuck in the optical drive. When using the Optical Drive make sure the disk you are using is oriented correctly (correct side facing up). You can follow our guides to remove the optical drive, and replace it with a new one or clean it for better use.
Keyboard Not Working
If your entire keyboard or specific keys on your keyboard are not working it can be removed to be fixed or replaced. Follow our guide to see how to remove the keyboard safely.

I hope this will help because this happened to me and I hope it works in your case, flip over your laptop where there is a battery symbol take a paper clip or tack mine worked with a tack and hold for 4 seconds MAKE SURE THE LAPTOP IS UNPLUGGED and charged and then hold down the power button like the way you would usually turn on and then it should turn on !! Good day sir, when I press the power button of my acer aspire one notebook the power indicator lights on and the fan starts working, but for a several seconds the fan shuts down and no display on screen, seems like a dead set, i have tried many suggestions as to remove the battery, the ac charger, press the power button for 30 seconds then put back the battery then press power button again, but no luck. There are all too many complaints about various Acer laptops that mirror what Gilbert G. has stated. My 5251 is in exactly the same boat. I have tried all the things Gilbert tried, w/o luck. Have swapped hard drive out; still no-go. Tested CMOS battery (it is soldered in), but it reads over 3 volts. so should be good. Have had laptop all apart and reseated all connections I could get at. Have swapped out the CPU, but that made no difference. I have come to believe that, somehow, the BIOS has become corrupted. The various “instructions” from diff. sources are not very clear about how one might go about reinstalling/reflashing the BIOS. I am trying various BIOS downloads, with a pressing of Fn-Esc keys; no fix yet, but the laptop does run the fan at full speed on some of the tries, so I am hopeful I will yet find the right “combinations” to make this work. Disappointed in Acer that they do not provide clear instructions on how to deal with BIOS issues.

STILL NOTHING…. NO LED LIGHTS…. NO POWER
next options to try…
- replace large battery
- Replace C-Mos battery
Questions…. Could a virus damage the actual power button?
I am open to possible solutions.
Any other ideas?
