At iFixit, we love tools. Like, a lot. We know how important it is to have the right tools for each project—that’s why we spent thousands of hours developing the best toolkits for getting inside electronic devices. Some tools are so important that you always need to have them on you, just in case.
iFixit team members have a wide range of hobbies. Whether we’re on our way to the office, exploring the local coast to check out the surfing conditions, or finding ourselves at an impromptu birthday party, we stay prepared. We talked to ten of our team members to get a look inside their everyday carry and what items they consider essential:

Jarred, Software Engineer
Items in your EDC: Macbook Pro, iPhone, Leatherman, knife, lockpicking set, Muji pen, Grandfather’s Mont Blanc pen, lens wipes, handkerchief, coffee vessel
Activities you use these for: Work, random life situations

Activities you use these for: Getting to and from work, streaming music, buying things, breaking down boxes, camping

Scott, Shipping supervisor
Items in your EDC: Phone, headphones, external HDD, power bank
Activities you use these for: Music is my life. The headphones are for on the go listening, the power bank is for emergency headphone charging, and I keep all my terrible 90’s/00’s music backed up on the external HHD

Arthur, Tech Writer
Items in your EDC: iPhone, flashlight/headlight, Leatherman, Fisher Telescoping Space pen (with turquoise ink!), jet lighter, USB drive, titrium keychain, wallet

Taylor, Teardown Engineer
Items in your EDC: inhaler, pocket knife, earbuds (wired + wireless), USB drive, phone, lips balm, wallet, puppy poop bag
Activities you use these for: Training my new puppy, staying alive during an asthma attack. Wireless *and* wired earbuds because you can never rely on wireless buds! And a USB stick is the digital equivalent to a pocket knife—you never know when you’ll need it but you’re always glad to have it when the need arises.
Favorite Toolkit: Minnow Driver Kit. I love that little thing.

Craig, Head of Technical Writing
Items in your EDC: MacBook Air, iPhone, Apple Watch, Leatherman, water bottle, sunglasses, lip balm, face mask, keys, wallet, work badge, messenger bag

Megan, don’t use debit cards. It’s not a matter of if it will get stolen, but when. And you have far fewer protections on that money than you would a credit card (i.e. real money, really stolen…) Use a credit card, and pay it fully weekly. Get one with a kickback too, worth it in the end.
Also, lots of love here for Leatherman. Got one in mine too. Plus, a USB flash drive with various “tools” on it, a kit of a few wire types with adapters if needed, a Dell XPS laptop, and my work’s hotspot. Oh, and a small thing of Rolaids for those days that don’t go so well. :)

Arthur, where did you get the case? I’d love to have and xray case AND wallpaper!

The xray is actually a SlickWraps “transparent” series skin that I applied to an iPhone case!
