Manual Setup - Printer configuration
  • While Windows 7 is being shown here, the same steps apply in Windows 10 and 11.

  • Manual configuration is required when using the HP UPD to replace failing legacy drivers on printers setup using a USB cable. These older printers use "USB_001" or "DOT4" depending on the age of the printer. (IMPORTANT: most of the older bulletproof models like the 1012, 1200, 4200 and 4300 series are old enough to require "DOT4")

  • Find Devices and Printers. The location will vary based on what version of Windows is installed. Search for Control panel and find Devices and Printers.

  • Click Add a Printer. If your printer uses USB, select Add a Local printer. For networked printers, select Add a Network, Wireless, or Bluetooth printer.

  • Allow your computer to populate the driver list. Find HP and then locate the driver that says HP Universal Printing (PCL6/PostScript). Select the driver and click Next.

  • Name your printer, then click Next.
