    • Authors note: Any REASONABLY NEW laser printer supports PCL6 as a general rule (but confirm with the spec sheet!). However, some older monochrome lasers (and early low end color models, such as the CLJ CP1025) often have limited RAM (often 64MB OR LESS). This can result in "PCL personality error" pages, which clear with a power cycle.

    • Due to the general nature of this guide, specific languages are not covered. The HP UPD supports PCL6 and PostScript.

    • Find out what print languages your printer supports. The LaserJet Pro M401 series supports PCL6 and PostScript. However, PCL6 is recommended when possible.

    • Get your printer ready for setup. If you use USB, connect the printer now. If networked, make sure to get your printers IP address now as it will be needed later on.

    • While Windows 7 is being shown here, the same steps apply in Windows 10 and 11.

    • This method can be used for USB printing or network printing but requires manual setup, as it copies the files to the computer in the Windows driver folder. This can be used in place of model-specific drivers, which can sometimes work around bugs that come up as the printer ages

    • At the installation screen, select USB mode- Plug and Play.

    • Once you select the mode, pick the options you wish to use. While these settings can be changed, leave it as-is unless you understand what this does to the Windows driver store.

    • Click Next and the files will be copied to your computer.
