Determine the patch dimensions
  • Add at least 1/2 inch (~13 mm) in each direction—so at least 1 inch (~25 mm) total—to each damage dimension measurement from the previous step.

  • These new measurements will be the final patch size, which is the size of the patch when it's sewn on.

  • The fabric directly surrounding the damage is weak and unable to hold stitching. This additional space ensures the patch can be securely attached and provides a buffer in case the damage grows.

  • Optionally, mark the size and orientation of the patch onto the garment.
