Determine the patch dimensions

Add at least 1/2 inch (~13 mm) in each direction—so at least 1 inch (~25 mm) total—to each damage dimension measurement from the previous step.
These new measurements will be the final patch size, which is the size of the patch when it's sewn on.
The fabric directly surrounding the damage is weak and unable to hold stitching. This additional space ensures the patch can be securely attached and provides a buffer in case the damage grows.
Optionally, mark the size and orientation of the patch onto the garment.
