Down and synthetic insulation

  • Despite looking the same from the outside, topstitching has slightly different functionality on different types of insulation:

  • Down Insulation - The stitching is crucial to the functionality of the insulation because it creates separate baffles (channels) that contain the feathers. Snagged loops and cut threads should be repaired as soon as possible.

  • Synthetic Sheet Insulation (Nano Puff®, DAS®) - The stitching on sheet insulation holds the insulation in place against a shell or liner. Since the sheet insulation can hold itself together, thread snags and cuts are less detrimental than with down garments. Cutting loose Nano Puff threads doesn't affect technical performance.

  • Synthetic Yarn Insulation (Micro/Macro Puff®/DAS® Light) - Yarn-style insulation is a hybrid of down and sheet insulation. The yarn clusters hold themselves in place vertically, and the topstitching holds them in place horizontally. Snagged and torn stitching is less imperative to fix than down, but more crucial than sheet insulation.

Daunen- und synthetische Isolierung

Von außen sehen die Steppnähte gleich aus, aber je nach Isolierung haben sie eine leicht unterschiedliche Funktion:

Daunen: Die Naht hat eine äußerst wichtige Funktion für die Isolierung. Sie sorgt dafür, dass getrennte Kammern für die Federn entstehen. Herausgezogene Fadenschlingen und gerissene Fäden sollten so schnell wie möglich repariert werden.

Isolierung aus synthetischen Matten (Nano Puff®, DAS®) - Die Naht befestigt die Isolierung am Stoff oder am Futter. Diese Isolierung hält von sich aus zusammen, deswegen sind gerissene Nähte und Fadenschlingen nicht so schlimm wie bei Daunen. Die technischen Eigenschaften einer Nano Puff Isolierung werden dadurch nicht beeinträchtigt.

Synthetisches Vließ (Micro/Macro Puff®/DAS® Light) - Vließähnliche Isolierungen sind eine Mischung aus Daunen- und Synthetikisolierung. Das Vließ hält vertikal von selbst, horizontal wird es von den Steppnähten gehalten. Nahtschäden sind weniger schlimm als bei Daunen, die Füllung ist aber doch empfindlicher als bei einer Synthetikfüllung.
