Backbone One Teardown

  • This Joy Con-esque controller may look like any other mobile gamepad—but on paper at least, it packs a few surprises. Let's unfurl a few of them here:

  • D-pad and thumbstick on the left. A-B-X-Y buttons and thumbstick on the right. Shoulder and trigger buttons on each side.

  • Lightning port for passthrough charging and connecting accessories.

  • 3.5 mm headphone jack—a welcome sight here, after being dropped from the iPhone in 2016 and never seen again (well, almost never). Welcome back, little buddy!

  • Specialty buttons for instant muting, launching the Backbone app, and recording gameplay.

  • A couple interesting things missing: Bluetooth and an internal battery. The Backbone One connects to—and draws power from—your iPhone directly.

  • We can't decide if having no battery and no Bluetooth is a feature—but it seemingly reduces the number of things to go wrong.

Smontaggio Backbone One

Questo controller dallo stile Joy Con-esco può sembrare non diverso da qualsiasi altro gamepad; però, almeno sulla carta, ha in serbo qualche sorpresa. Sveliamone qualcuna:

D-pad e levetta sulla sinistra. Pulsanti A-B-X-Y e levetta sulla destra. Pulsanti frontali e grilletti su ciascun lato.

Porta Lightning per ricarica passthrough e il collegamento di accessori.

Jack cuffie da 3,5 mm; una presenza benvenuta, dopo essere stata abbandonata dall'iPhone nel 2016 e mai più ricomparsa (cioè, quasi mai). Bentornato, piccolo amico!

Pulsanti specifici per il muting istantaneo, il lancio dell'app Backbone e la registrazione gameplay.

Un paio di cose interessanti che mancano: il Bluetooth e una batteria interna. Il Backbone One si collega direttamente al tuo iPhone e ne succhia l'energia.

Non sappiamo dire se l'assenza di una batteria e di Bluetooth sia una caratteristica da rimarcare, ma certamente riduce il numero di cose che possono andar male.
