After having cleared out the inside of the Lightning Connector, carefully apply contact cleaner. It may not be a bad idea to mask off the rest of the phone before doing this. My Lightning Connector had been removed from the phone so it wasn't a problem I had to deal with.

Do this outside if possible as contact cleaner can stink.
