[title] ISO writing application acquisition | |
- | [* black] Get a USB flash drive. You should at least use an ***8GB*** drive. 8GB drives should be future proof until ISO's start to exceed 8GB. However, 16GB will probably be better if you can afford a 16GB drive. If you cannot afford a new drive or want to reuse an old one, a 4GB drive will work. |
- | [* black] Download a program called [https://rufus.akeo.ie/|Rufus] to write the ISO to your USB drive. This is what we will be using to write the ISO to the USB flash drive. |
- | [* black] If you cannot make Rufus work, [https://unetbootin.github.io/|Unetbootin] can be used in place of Rufus. However, Unetbootin is starting to show it's age. It is known to have problems with the NTFS filesystem and Hybrid ISO's. While it still works, it is on borrowed time before it becomes too old to be viable. |
- | [* black] Download the program you have decided to use. You are going to need this for later. Put this in a dedicated folder for the ISO writing process so you know where it is for when you need it so you do not have to re download it. |
+ | [* black] Get a ***8-16GB*** flash drive. While 8GB will be plenty for the guide, 16GB drives are going to be more common and usually do not cost much more. It will also last you a bit longer then the 8GB drives will, depending on the distro you choose. If your drive is used, you can get by with a 4GB USB drive for this guide. |
+ | [* black] To write the ISO to the drive, download [https://rufus.akeo.ie/|Rufus]. This is going to be the main utility that gets used and is recommended over many legacy utilities. |
+ | [* black] Download the program you have decided to use. Put it somewhere you can quickly find it later. |
[* icon_note] ***Note on USB drive condition.*** This guide was written around use of a new USB drive, rather then a used drive. While used drives will work, you will need to format it before you can write an ISO to the drive. This altered order will be 5/6/7/1/2/3/4 or 8/1/2/3/4. If you use Rufus, you should not have to manually format the drive. |
