How to Clean battery acid on Minolta Maxxum 5000/7000/9000 AAA battery cover
Introduction
If you have a old or newly acquired Maxxum 5000/7000/9000 and notice battery corrosion, this guide will show you how to remove the cover and clean the acid.
***GUIDE NOTES***
* THIS GUIDE ONLY COVERS THE AAA COVER, AS IT IS THE MOST COMMON. AA covers do not need a special cleanup procedure due to their design; just pour and clean.
* T***his will remove the nickel plating, as there is no way to save it when this occurs.*** It can be cleaned without neutralization to preserve it first, but the acid mist be neutralized. You can try this to reduce the plating loss with pre-neutralization cleanup, but it is up to you. ***It may be damaged without proper cleanup, so do not skip this to save the nickel.***
* After cleaning, you MUST put a new set of batteries in the camera -- NO EXCEPTIONS! None of the original batteries can be reused.
* ***IF THE ACID SITS TOO LONG, IT CAN DAMAGE THE COVER BEYOND REPAIR.*** You must replace the cover in this case; if possible, seek out the a Lithium cover (CR2, 123 or 2CR5) if possible. However, these are not commonly found compared to AA/AAA covers.
** ***Yes, these batteries cost more (and the 2CR5 is less common) but they do not leak. 123 and CR2 batteries are more common due to use in gun accessories. The 2CR5 is a specialty battery for analog cameras and early digital models.***
* In some cases, you may need to sand the terminals on the body down slightly. If the acid comes in contact, it tends to leave a small stain but rarely goes through the posts.
