If your laptop won’t power on despite cleaning the charging port, switching chargers, or trying different power outlets, a faulty battery may be the cause. Use this guide to learn how to safely replace the battery in your laptop.
Laptop batteries can degrade over time, resulting in shorter battery life, sudden shutdowns, or failure to power on altogether. Replacing the battery is often a simple fix that can restore your device's portability and reliability without a lot of effort.
Before starting this guide, confirm that the problem is with the battery and not another component. Try using a known working charger and checking for signs of power like LED indicators, such as the keyboard lighting up, or startup sounds like a fan spinning or air exhausting from the vents. If your laptop still shows no response, a dead battery is likely the point of failure.
This guide requires opening the laptop case and exposing internal components. Be cautious of sharp edges and avoid touching any circuitry and exposed electronics to prevent damage from static electricity. Use an anti-static wrist strap (such as one of these) if possible, and make sure your laptop is completely powered off and unplugged before beginning the replacement process.
If your device is swollen, bulging, overheating, or smoking, discontinue use immediately and DO NOT try and power on. It should be replaced immediately. Be sure to dispose of your swollen battery properly.
