There are no set rules as to when you should wash your jacket, but there are a few signs that the time has come: wetting out (no longer water repellent), stained cuffs or collar, or downright dirtiness! Brush off any loose dirt or debris.

Particularly dirty spots should be pretreated. Make a soapy mixture with water and the detergent you intend to use and scrub the soiled area with a soft brush or sponge.

Close the main zipper of the jacket to help prevent damage to the zipper while laundering

Loosen all hood and hem draw cords and loosen cuff tabs

Open the zippers of all pocket bags to allow soap and water to access the often-dirty pocket bags

Place the jacket in the washing machine and add the detergent

There are two types of recommended detergents:

Detergents designed specifically for the washing of technical outdoor gear that can be purchased at most outdoor gear stores

Water-based (not oil-based), biodegradable liquid detergent free of dye, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance. Many of these detergents are marketed as " for sensitive skin"

More than one technical garment can be washed at once, but do not exceed more than half of the size of the washing machine drum

Set the load size according to the relative number of garments

Set the water temperature to Warm or Cold

Run the washer on a regular or permanent press cycle setting

If possible, set an extra rinse cycle

Run a separate rinse cycle if the machine did not have the option in the last step

Take the garment out of the washing machine

Hang to air dry if you have the time

Place the garment into the dryer either wet or after having air-dried

Set the dryer to at least 20 minutes of Tumble Dry low.

The heat of the dryer is crucial to resetting the DWR coating
