Before beginning this hard drive replacement, make sure your laptop is unplugged and powered off. Then follow the steps for removing the back cover and battery from the HP ProBook 640 G2 Battery Replacement Guide before moving on to the next step.

Flip the laptop so the bottom is facing up.

Use a JIS J1 screwdriver to remove eight 6 mm screws from the bottom of the laptop case.

Use a Torx T9 screwdriver to remove the single 6 mm screw.

Use a plastic opening tool to carefully pry the bottom case.

Insert the end of the opening tool into the seam between the bottom and top case and slide it around the perimeter to release the clips.

Remove the bottom cover.

Use a JIS J1 screwdriver to remove the seven 6 mm screws securing the battery.

Lift the battery from the bottom edge and slide it out of the socket on the motherboard.

Loosen the four JIS J1 captive screws on the hard drive tray.

Use the black tab on the hard drive tray and pull it toward the bottom of the laptop to remove the drive.

Use the JIS J1 screwdriver to remove the four 3.0 mm screws on the sides of the hard drive tray—two from each side.

Remove the old hard drive from the tray.

To reassemble your device, follow these instructions in reverse order. Take your e-waste to an R2 or e-Stewards certified recycler.
