Background
The Sony MVC-FD200 is part of the Sony's Mavica (Magnetic Video Camera) series, which became popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s for its use of the 3.5" floppy disks as storage media. The Sony MVC-FD200 was released in 2002. This model was one of the final models in the Mavica lineup. Unlike the older models that relied on the 3.5" floppy disks, the FD200 added support for Memory Stick media, allowing users to store more photos at higher resolutions. The Sony MVC featured a 2.0 megapixel CCD sensor, 3x optical zoom lens, and a 2.5-inch LCD screen.
What made the FD200 very popular at the time was the dual media capability and simplicity in transferring photos without the need for cables or special software. The dual media support was especially helpful at a time when computers with floppy drives were common, but Memory Sticks were becoming more affordable and offered far greater storage capacity. The FD200 also offered basic video recording capabilities and features like automatic exposure, built-in flash, and simple menu navigation, making it ideal for casual users, families, and educators.
The MVC-FD200 was the end of the Mavica era as Sony shifted focus toward Memory Stick-only models and more compact digital cameras.
Identification
This model of the Mavica is identified by the model FD200 on the handgrip of the camera. It also has stickers under the flash stating that it is a dual media camera and has 2.0 megapixels.
