Motorola announced the release of its 2023 flagship 5G mobile phone in the slab form factor on April 4 of that year, naming the device the Edge 40 Pro and making it available for retail purchase the same day. The base model offers 256 GB of internal, UHS 4.0-rated storage for an MSRP of €899, with an upgrade model on offer that features 512 GB of the same for €999; a choice of "Interstellar Black" or "Lunar Blue" exterior finish for the all-glass exterior was available for both. The company promised three major OTA operating system upgrades for the model that would be complete upon the release of Android 16 to complement the four years of monthly security patches that would be provided until April 2027.

Bearing the model number XT2301-1 and assigned the code name rtwo, the Edge+ (2023) is a regional variant of the Edge 40 Pro in a lone configuration of 8 GB RAM and 512 GB internal storage for U.S. channels. It was announced on May 2, 2023 with an MSRP of US$799.99, going on-sale in retail channels on May 19, 2023. Originally using Android 13 "Tiramisu", it has since received the two major OTA operating system upgrades to which it was entitled, most recently on April 14, 2025 which added support for Android 15 "Vanilla Ice Cream". A total of four years of monthly security patches were included at the time of release, with the final installment set to arrive in May 2027.
