Background
The Dell Chromebook 3100 is a durable, education-focused laptop released in early 2019 as part of Dell's Chromebook line for schools and students. Designed to be rugged, it features rubberized edges, a spill-resistant keyboard, and reinforced ports to help withstand heavy use in schools. Touchscreen and non-touchscreen variants of the laptop are available and ship with Chrome OS, Google's lightweight OS optimized for web-based services.
Equipped with an 11.6-inch HD display, Intel Celeron CPU, and eMMC storage, the Chromebook 3100 is built for speed and efficiency in web-based applications. Since it is being utilized heavily in U.S. and other K-12 schools, it requires frequent repair, particularly of components like the keyboard, display, and battery.
While maintaining its compact form factor, the Chromebook 3100 includes USB-C, USB-A, and a microSD card slot, so it works with standard peripherals. Its modular internal design and repair-friendly build make it a practical option for DIY repairs and component replacement, especially for school IT departments looking to extend device lifecycles.
Identification
The Dell Chromebook 3100 is a very compact black laptop with a plastic body. It has a textured matte finish on the lid and base. Rubber bumpers are built into the edges of the machine. The machine measures around 11.96 x 8.19 x 0.82 inches (30.38 x 20.78 x 2.09 cm) in dimensions and weighs around 2.85 lbs (1.29 kg). The 11.6-inch display of the Chromebook 3100 is available in touchscreen and non-touchscreen options. The touchscreen model has a shiny screen with a glassy smooth finish, while the non-touch model has a matte finish screen with an anti-glare coating. The screen bezels are relatively thick, especially at the bottom, where the Dell logo appears. On the sides are two USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack, all sunk slightly into the case. The keyboard is spill-resistant and has slightly concave keys, and the trackpad is in the middle below the keyboard with a matte, smooth coating. The user will be able to tell the model by looking at a label on the underside of the device with the service tag and the model number. The Chromebook 3100 was available in only black; there was no other colors available.
