Background
The CAT S22 Flip was the first flip-style device released within the CAT phone lineup, developed under license from Caterpillar Inc. and manufactured by Bullitt Group Ltd.
Bullitt Group Ltd, founded in 2009, initially produced rugged mobile phones under the JCB brand before transitioning to a licensing agreement with Caterpillar Inc. in 2012. This partnership led to the creation of CAT-branded devices designed specifically for professionals working in demanding environments such as construction, industrial operations, and field services.
The CAT S22 Flip marked a distinct shift in the product line by introducing a rugged flip phone form factor, combining traditional usability with modern Android functionality. Unlike other CAT smartphones, the S22 Flip was designed to appeal to users who preferred simple, durable, and glove-friendly devices without sacrificing essential smart features.
It succeeded earlier rugged smartphones such as the CAT S64 and was later followed by devices like the CAT S53, which returned to a more conventional smartphone design.
Despite its practical design and niche appeal, the CAT S22 Flip remained a specialized product within the lineup. Sales figures were not publicly disclosed, but the device was primarily adopted by users seeking reliability over advanced features.
Production of CAT phones ceased following the insolvency of Bullitt Group Ltd in January 2024. Remaining units, including the S22 Flip, continue to be available through third-party sellers. The CAT brand has since been licensed to Orbic for future rugged mobile device development.
