iBook G4 hard drive replacement

I just replaced the hard drive in my 2001 iBook g4 to a 320 gb western digital ATA that i bought from this site. i re-installed my original disks and the computer is still not working properly, my problems are as follows, Safari keeps quitting on me I open sites such as Facebook and the home page is okay but once i sign in the page will not fully load and then safari knocks me off.

If I buy os 10.4 and install will this fix my problem? Or is it something else that is vexing me. Before I put this new hard drive in i was having the same problems that is what made me take it to apple store and they told me the hard drive was shot.and they could not replace cause computer was over 5 years old.

Now I am wondering if I use the computer to check my email am I damaging the new Drive and if I spent 120 bucks on something that was unfixable :( I am at the library now typing this cause my computer won't let login to this site but I can view answers to my query from there.

How do you connect to the internet? Hardwire or wireless?

Hook up to your modem via a hard wired connection and see if the problem persists. This sounds like a Airport card issue to me.

I am not that compuetr savvy but I am learning. By hardwire do you mean phone connection ?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Hook up using a ethernet cable (Cat 5) directly to the DSL modem. If this works then the problem is with your Airport card or antenna. What system are you running? Also, as machead says, I would go to Firefox and download their browser. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fir...

Try FIREFOX instead of Safari

i - safari (especially early revs) is known for not playing well with others. and some of the sites you like have nonstandard code... (run W3C Markup Validation Service you'll see 25 Errors, 2 warning(s) on the Facebook login page for example...

Other browsers are more "forgiving" of nonstandard code:

  • Firefox
  • I.E. for Mac (5.2)
  • Camino
  • Opera

You'll need a version that will run on 10.3x or whatever OS you're using.

Good Luck,

N.

I'm not sure this is the problem, but OS X 10.3 won't run the latest version of Safari.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

No the current version of Firefox requires 10.4 and the next version will require 10.5 Ralph

I didn't mean current versions, but the proper version for that OS Earlier versions of Mozilla were aka Netscape.

Most likely the card but could be the antenna or even a logic board problem. I'd try borrowing a airport card card and try that first. It would also be the easiest repair. Ralph

Thank you

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Wireless IS NEVER as fast as cable! Cable will be between 10-100Mbps. When your computer uses wireless 802.11g its between 11Mbps at best and depending upon the Channel, Beacon/DTIM Interval, and the Fragmentation/RTS Threshold (that's correct for your router/laptop settings) could be as low as 1Mbps.
