Repurposing a DVD drive

Hi there. Have a Sony DVD drive in a desktop computer and would love to use it as an external drive for my laptop as the desktop is now surplus. Is this a good idea and what sort of caddy solution might you suggest?

Hi @scottwalte59369

It depends on what type of connection the dvd drive has e.g. IDE (pata) or sata as to what caddy you could use.

If it has a sata connection you could use a sata to USB caddy or you could get one that handles both types of connnectons

Remember to get a USB adapter with standalone 12V power, disc drives require 12V to power the heavy spindle motor.
