President Grant AM SSB needs help.

I have a President Grant 40 channel. AM SSB. It appears to be recieving as it sounds like it when antenna is connected. It has a external VFO. Antenna is nice at 27mhz. Its new to me and I havent had the back of yet. Questions.

What exactly is my VFO for?

My signal strength needle does not seem to work, does not move much?

My select switch could be bad as I have LSB but it is dead quiet on AM and USB

Update (01/09/26)

The radio come with a small kenwood mic, which did not work, another new CB mike I had here seems to work. The light comes on when triggered. The VFO has an on off switch, do you think I will ever use it? When it triggers the signal meter shows a small movement.

Update (01/10/26)

The signal meter rises up with modulation when I key the mic and speak.

@pete1559 What exactly is my VFO for? It allows you to tune and select any specific frequency in any band. It's the opposite of your memory mode (CH) mode which uses stored frequencies. Does your TX light on the face of the radio light up when you press the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button?

@pete1559 you might use it if you are going to transmit or receive a specific frequency.
