kernel panic with usb 2.0 cardbus adapter

I have used a usb 2.0 card bus adapter in my 1 GHz PowerBook for over a year. One day, the pbg4 was asleep and my son thought it was off and held the power button to start it. He got that long beep and ever since then, if I try to plug the USB 2.0 card in the card bus, it causes a kernel panic and I have to shut down. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix it? thanks!

Did you try to reset the logic board by tripping the small cuda switch under the keyboard ?

Fron the Apple support web site:

If the computer is on, turn it off.

Disengage the two keyboard latches located between the Esc and F1 keys, and the F11 and F12 keys. (You may also need to disengage the keyboard locking screw located between the F5 and F6 keys.)

Lift the keyboard. To ensure no harmful static electricity is transferred to the computer, properly ground yourself before performing this procedure.

Press and release the reset button located on the upper right side of the logic board near the power button, shown here.

Wait 5 seconds.

Press the power button to restart the computer. >>

No luck. Even after resetting the logic board by tripping the cuda switch the same things happened. If I start up with the USB 2.0 PC card in the slot, the PBg4 only gets to the gray apple screen. If I start up and then put the card in, the computer freezes and when I take out the card, I get the kernel error.

This may take some trial and error. Shut down and insert the card. Start up holding down the Shift key. Please give me some information on the card.

I have not done this. I haven't had problems with my old PowerBook in years, so I've forgotten all the boot keys. What does the shift do while starting up? Also, I'll have to try it this afternoon.

The pc card is Trendnet USB 2.0 CardBus, model TU2-H4PC, hardware version 1.1. Trendnet does not support mac on this device. However, I purchased it from one of the Mac parts providers online and their sales person verified it would work with a PBG4 before I purchased it, over 1 hear ago. I cannot find info on its chipset. thanks.

The "Shift" key upon boot will make the computer boot into safe mode.

When I followed these instructions, the PBG4 acted like it was going to start up. While I was holding the shift key, the fan started, the machine clicked and it went all the way to the grey apple screen. However, it never swirled and never went any further. I tried this with a different USB 2.0 card that I picked up today - an IOGEAR that says their cards definitely support through osX 10.5.8. I got the same results with the IOGEAR PC card and starting up in safe mode. With both PC cards, the computer went to the gray apple screen, but no further. When I took the PC CARD out, I got the kernel error message and black screen. thank you for your suggestions.

From your original problem description I didn't realize you had a problem without the card in. Start up from your original installation disk in the Cd holding down the "C" key and run Disk Utilities.
