How to reinstall speed controller knob

My speed control knob as locked up. I removed to lube it. But I cannot figure out how to properly put it back. the pin goes on one side. the gears slide forward and back. but not sure where the pin should align. i can only get limited movement. Any input welcome. pics should be attached if I did it correctly
