Does the hard drive have its own power supply or does it get power from the USB port in the laptop?
If it hasn't got its own power supply, try plugging in a mobile phone or a USB mouse and check if the phone starts to charge or the mouse laser light turns on.
If they don't then see the Chosen Solution to the question for a similar problem asked on ifixit
