- Unplug the device from AC power.
- If your model has a battery backup, remove the battery (usually a CR2032 or AA/AAA cells).
- Wait 1–2 minutes.
- Reinsert the battery (if present) and plug in the device.
- Check if the buttons respond.
Sometimes blinking digits are a reset signal, and unplugging/resetting may fix it.
- With time, dust or sticky residue can prevent the buttons from registering presses.
- Inspect carefully around each button. If you see dirt or sticky residue, try gently cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab.
Since you already opened the outer cover:
- Remove the screws on the bottom and/or back of the unit. Keep track of their positions.
- Carefully separate the top cover. Usually, the buttons are mounted on a plastic membrane sheet that sits on top of the main circuit board.
- The buttons themselves are often conductive rubber pads. If these pads are misaligned or worn, pressing won’t register.
Important tips while opening:
- Take pictures at each step so you can reassemble correctly.
- Be gentle with ribbon cables—they are fragile.
- Note the orientation of the speaker and projector assembly (if your model has a clock projection).
- With the cover off, locate the rubber button membrane over the PCB.
- Press each pad with your finger or a plastic tool. You should feel a small click.
- If a button is not responding, check the PCB underneath:
- Sometimes the copper pads are dirty or corroded.
- Clean lightly with isopropyl alcohol.
- If pads are worn, you may need to replace the button membrane, which may be sourced from Sony parts suppliers.
- After cleaning and checking the buttons, carefully reassemble the device.
- Plug in and see if the clock stops blinking and the buttons work.
💡 Extra tip: If the buttons are completely unresponsive even after cleaning and pressing directly on the PCB pads, the issue may be internal to the control board, possibly a failed microcontroller or solder joint. In that case, unless you’re comfortable with electronics repair, it might be simpler to use it with a new clock radio.
