Repair guides, support, and troubleshooting information for the first 13-inch MacBook Air to feature Apple's ARM-based M1 SoC (with an 8-core CPU and up to an 8-core GPU). Released in November 2020 and identified by model numbers A2338 or EMC 3598.

Help with troubleshooting the right power issues A2338 motherboard

Hey everyone!

I'm trying to fix a laptop (Apple m1 A2338 macbook air) for a friend, and I'm trying to identify what on the motherboard is broken (she spilled a little water on it).
The laptop does not power on.  I have the motherboard out, and I have a volt meter and soldering tools. I found a few youtube videos on it, but there is no visible damager at all on the motherboard. Most of the youtube videos I have seen show someone identifying visible damage and the resoldering a few things.
I have no visible damager anywhere on any side of the motherboard. I have a hunch that one power chip is just not working and the rest of it is good. But I'm not sure how to identify it.

I guess what I'm looking for is some help for identifying where on the motherboard I can check with my volt meter so I can identify the issue. The motherboard look so clean, I feel like its got to be something simple!

Thanks
Phillip

@phillipdav53508 do you have the schematics for this?

You can search for the right one for your exact model as the A2238 is a MBP and not an Air as pointed to in the question, and download it together with the board view software in case you never had it, and go from there.

List of Apple Board Numbers - Board views & schematics can be found on this site.

A2337 2020 MacBook Air 13" M1 - 820-02016

A2338 2020 MacBook Pro 13" M1 - 820-02020

A2338 2022 MacBook Pro 13" M2 - 820-02773

I would start by very closely examining the outer edges of the board as there is more likely the water has shorted something, you'll need a good Microscope to zoom in...Hope that helps getting the ball rolling!
