Samsung announced the Galaxy Ring at its "Unpacked" event on July 10, 2024. The new Galaxy Flip and Fold6, new Galaxy Buds and new Galaxy Watch were also announced.

Thoughts on repairs process after today.

Its not a question, but after stumbling across your teardown today looking for some answers, id like to post this so others are aware. If its not allowed, I apologise, and im also now aware that where I wrote "60%", it should have been "40%".

So if anyone has any other thoughts on this (it was an email sent to tmtfirst - the official samsung repair provider), then I would be happy to listen.

Good afternoon,

I am writing about the above service number which will now be on it's way back to me, after I rejected the repair cost that you quoted.

On Saturday, 15th November, I sent you in a Samsung ring to be checked over, which was collected on that day, despite asking for a Monday collection - with this, I had to come back home early whilst meeting someone and changing my plans because of it.

Upon your receipt yesterday, you told me I then had to pay £30 to get it reviewed, which I paid, despite knowing that you would most probably come back with some exorbitant price for repair.

Following that, today I received a quote of a further £414 to fix the ring; which quite frankly is ridiculous for the following reasons:

On the official Samsung site, it is £299 currently to buy a new one.

On the EE website, it is £249 currently to buy a new one.

In iFixit.de's teardown of the ring ( Samsung’s Galaxy Ring Revealed - iFixit ) , it states that you should get up to 2 years use out of it, which wasn't really specified to begin with - had I known it was "e-waste", I would never have bought it in the first place. I bought the item before the teardowns were on the internet, and was never clearly shown that this would be the case.

With this in mind, it seems to me that at very least your "repair service" for the samsung ring is something of a scam, if not the whole product - you have deliberately charged me £30 to look at something that you know is frankly unrepairable, and then had the audacity to try and charge me £414 more to basically send a new item out under the guise of it being repaired, that currently you can purchase for 60% less.

Can you therefore understand my conclusion that I should be entitled to some form of compensation at very least because of the £30 charged for something that you as a company know could not be done, and again potentially for making me change my plans on Saturday, for a collection that I specifically asked for on another day?

Please respond to this email within 1 week (5 working days), or this information will be forwarded to my local MP for further scrutiny.

Thank you in advance.

Full reply:

Good afternoon,

Thank you for your email.

Firstly, please be advised that we have no control over the collection date or times as collections are arranged by Samsung themselves and not us here at TMT First. Along with this, the pricing is also set in place by Samsungs part costs.

Moving on, regarding the £30 inspection fee, for any items we receive that are out of warranty by age or damage automatically receive a £30 non refundable email and if wanting to proceed this £30 will be deducted from the overall quotation.

As you can appreciate, before paying the £30 the engineers did not complete any inspections to your ring so we were not aware of any potential costs or faults at that current time so we were not able to provide any further information until inspections have been completed.

On this occasion, no compensation will be provided.

We apologise about any inconvenience this may cause.

alot of companies take a bench fee for time to look at an item and if the person decides to go ahead with the repair its deducted from the total value of the repair. in this case they offered you a solution which you didnt except therefore they kept the bench fee for possibly looking at it and return postage. what people that dont do repairs fail to realise is time isnt free, for instance if i was to look at a ps5 and didnt charge a bench fee i could spend 2-3 hours fault finding and it might be lost due to it not being repairable, now in them 2-3 hours i could maybe do 5+ other repairs that would make money. that is why a bench fee is charged

I get that, Daniel - i really do. Im not completely oblivious to time being used and payment for that. But I explicitly told them the battery life had gone, and then they decided to charge me the £30 to "look" at it, when they knew full well that the rings can't be repaired. I even quoted this site itself with the teardown stating as much, so why pretend that they can fix it, when the least they can say is we've received it, and all we can do is replace it for a new one for x cost?

If its widely known (now, not when I bought it) in the internet that the battery cannot be replaced, then why charge the money in the first place, when i told them it was the battery, after 2 months of me testing it out myself and failing to hold a charge for a day?

Maybe im very skeptical, but they took the money knowing full well they wouldn't look at it - to then charge an extra £389 to "fix" it (they didnt reply with "replace"), when they are for sale online new for £249 is rediculous, as you know it cant be fixed.
