The PlayStation 3 Slim is the second version of the PS3 video game console with the original model number CECH-2000. Produced by Sony Computer Entertainment it fixed many issues of the original (fat) Playstation 3. It was released on September 1, 2009.

Constant beeping followed by audio glitches

Hi. Just had a scary experience with my PS3 Slim (the first hardware revision). Was playing the HD remaster of Shadow of the Colossus and the console started making these horrendous, near constant beeping noises — it almost reminded me of an old dial-up modem. It would calm down briefly, and then start up again with a vengeance. This was followed by glitches in the game’s audio output (hdmi) and after a few moments of this, I quit out of the game by holding down the PS button on the controller… which caused a black screen and a forced reboot. The system did its usual “improper shutdown” hard drive check, and seemed fine. I shut it down and haven’t tried it since.

Just wondering if anyone’s experienced this and, if so, what am I in for? I replaced the console’s original 160gb hdd a few months ago, so I’m hoping that’s not the issue. Though I guess that would be preferable to laser failure or the YLOD! It’s been very gently used, so this came as something of a shock… even if it’s probably 15 years old.

I’ll give the console a proper dusting tomorrow and hope for the best! It’s actually my second PS3 — the first was the Super Slim model which just randomly died a few years ago. Aside from occasionally gaming on it, it’s my Blu-ray player, too, so I’ve got my fingers crossed.

Hi!

Did it make the beeping sounds with a disc inside? Can you try both a downloaded game (a free demo is enough) and disc game??

Can you also post a video regarding the beeping that it's doing?

Thank you!

@dan0 Hey there! I was playing the game off of an actual disc when the incident happened, yes.

But I went back a couple of hours later and ran the system’s “self-cleaning” mode (it just runs the fan at high speed for about 10 seconds) and hit the vents with compressed air, and then ran a lens cleaner. I then went back to the same point in the game where it started freaking out and… it worked just fine all the way through that segment, and then I was able to exit the game and shut down without any issues. Not a single beep. If it does happen again, I’ll try to record some audio and post it.

Thanks!

Okay, hopefully it will stay OK now!!

My guess for now is that there is/was something going on with the laser.

You can always try to download a demo and see if that one works if it happens again.

Hopefully it will stay OK for now! Have a nice day!

@dan0 Started Shadow of the Colossus up again today, and the beeping came back after 15 minutes or so. Exited the game (without issue) and tried some DLC gaming and the beeping didn’t resume. So yeah, I guess the laser is on its way out? Bummer! Included a short video to share the sound. Thanks again.

Hi!

Yeah, sound like the laser is having issues right now.

So, I recommend to replace the laser deck. Way easier to just replace the laser and you will also replace the other small (key) parts.

Unfortunately, I’m unable to play the video, but this should most likely do the trick!

Please let us know how it goes!
