Released in November 2020, the 13" MacBook Pro features Apple's Arm-based M1 SoC with both an 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU. (Model A2338 / EMC 3578 with two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Is my laptop done for?

Would you get this repaired or opt for a (new to me) refurbished laptop? I dropped my laptop one time recently and the one corner dented in pretty bad and the screen has some cracks. The display connection has been ruined and I just get a black screen with a little light on the cracks. What would you do?

You decide: parts available here, click "parts" at the top of the page or just browse from the link below:

Replacement Screen alone is $500...

Now, that might be all you MUST replace, but that can only be determined by opening it up to find out what else is damaged.... And your personal preferences... The degree of damage to the case is unclear, as "pretty bad", means very different things to different people. If it is cosmetic only, and you can live with that, maybe you won't have to fork out more than that screen cost... But... It's possible that it's also got other things wrong with it inside that we can't know about yet. Some of these (possibly damaged) things might be expensive and /or difficult to repair. There are more parts available here, you can add up the numbers of what you can tell you need, ballpark the numbers for the things that might be... But the only way to get a good idea is to get the puppy open and look, there's also the question of whether you can afford either option.... And whether you want to dive into the repair yourself... And whether you can get the repair done by someone else for a reasonable price are all stuff you need to weigh. The model page has guides to help you. Go For It!

If you decide to go for it, and need more help, just take photos of what you want advice on and ask, people will be happy to help you!

Good luck.

I should mention that if it works fine with an external monitor, it is a very good sign that all you need is the new screen as far as internal damage... so try that. Sadly it is not possible to replace ONLY the bad parts in the screen assembly... the parts are sold as single modules to ensure that repair is as expensive as possible to 'encourage' you to buy a new one instead... (environmentally conscious of them, yes?) that's the current "repairability" of the company's products. I, for one, detest the practice... but it is what it is.

@uchetil - Recovered used display assemblies are cheaper and reduces by one new part need from the factory saving the environment a bit!

As an example MacBook Pro 13" Complete Display, Silver (M1 2020/M2 2022) : Grade-B depending on your MacOS release you might be able to reenable TrueTone! Apple now offers within their newest MacOS a way now to add replacement parts back in!

@DanJ,

Good advice, I never actually work on Macs so I'm not up on the current parts availability, Thanks!

@uchetil - You took care of the question quite well! Here's a good used parts house in the UK I often use for Mac parts TheBookYard
