The Nintendo DSi is the third iteration in the Nintendo DS line, and made its debut in Japan in late 2008.

DSI bottom screen distorted with low contrast

Hi all,
I'm not that advanced at repairing things, so forgive me if this is something obvious, but I could not find any info online.
I recently bought a broken DSi. I looked up the listing's explanation of what was wrong and found an easy repair (just replacing the WiFi card) so I did it.
It seemed to work well for the first 20 minutes, but afterwards the bottom screen started getting more and more distorted and dimmer by the second. I'm attaching a video for context. I tried reseating the flex cables for the bottom screen and it seemed to work for a bit, but no more than half an hour later the bottom screen started acting weird again. Is there any fix for this, do I have to buy a whole new bottom screen, or is it even worse.
Please let me know guys, thanks in advance!!!

For anyone who has this issue in the future, the pot meter is most likely broken.

I bought a new one, and the screen stopped distorting.
Watch out for the aftermarket ones tho, as the part actually also includes the L/R buttons, volume buttons, and sd card reader.
My SD card is causing some problems now, so I'll probably have to look for the part from a different vendor.

@dan0 thanks for helping in identifying the broken part! I would never have guessed it myself.

Hi @orangejuice100

My pleasure!

Glad that you were able to fix the distorted lines with a new pot meter :)!!!

Hopefully you will fix the SD card problems as well!

Have a great day and take care!

Hi!

Oh I also had some DSi’s with the same issue here.

Usually this is a easy fix! I would check the pot meters and try to get the screen working again without blurry lines :).

Please see this video: https://youtu.be/_Fo0HDgBzzc?si=rjMp-JeN...

If that doesn’t work (usually it does work), try it with a new bottom screen and try to turn the pot meter again (carefully).

If it’s still failing, then you might want to repair the motherboard or swap it for another one..

Please let us know how it goes!

Okay so, I thought this helped, but the same thing happened as before ;(

It was okay for like half an hour and then started glitching out again.

It seems like the potentiometer does fix the issue, I just cant get it to stay fixed..

Any ideas before I go out and buy a new bottom screen?

Hmm... That is no good indeed. It does sound more like motherboard related at the moment then the screen. Perhaps the pot meter died or it's traces causing issues. I don't think a new screen will fix it, but it's worth a try. Otherwise you can return the screen and look for a new motherboard :(...

@dan0 Thanks for the advice. I ordered a new pot meter. Hopefully that'll help. I'll post once I replace it.

Ahh that is a great solution! Hopefully that is it :)!

Thanks!
