The Nintendo 3DS XL 2015, marketed as the New Nintendo 3DS XL, was released October 11, 2014 in Japan and February 13, 2015 in North America.

Black Screens/Blue Light

To preface this... I recently purchased a N3DSXL that was listed as powering on (blue light) with blank screens and this is the one in question for this post.

I also have been lucky enough to have a few months ago purchased a cheap N3DSXL that needed new screens but was confirmed working otherwise (meaning I have essentially all working parts to replace if needed aside from new screens but even the broken ones show parts of the screen and could be used to confirm a working system)

I have swapped out the game card reader/wifi chip which was unsuccessful.

I have swapped complete motherboards, looked at connectors, and have tried the wifi chips with both motherboards.

I have tried a soft reset countless times.

I have tried removing the SD card and doing a reset.

I have tried powering it on on the charger and letting it sit (maybe it has mind of it's own?).

NOTHING has worked. I figured maybe with the aforementioned pre diagnosis and my access to all of the parts maybe somebody could see a hopeful solution that i've missed.

On the plus side it appears that the components i've tested are functional i guess.

Thanks in advance for any help and sorry for the essay.

Hi!

Usually it's one of the small components causing this, with most of the time a small defect in the ribbon cable.

It could be the camera's or the speaker ribbon cable.

I would just test part for part, and eventually you will find the culprit.

Replacing the speakers assembly or the camera's could be difficult.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

I am en route to my workstation to try out the camera and speaker swap now and will update if the culprit is either of those. Thank you!

Well I didn't want to but I did. Took apart the top screen replaced the speaker cable. Same response: black screens and blue light with no sound.

I had also already tried hooking up another camera already and again same thing. The only thing I can assume at this point is that it is the top screen. I just from what I have dealt with expected a different response from the system if the top screen was the issue the whole time.

Hey! So I will admit that I was trying anything to nix out the top screen as an issue as the cable looks fine and i suspected it to be IPS. So i disconnected the bottom screen and backlight to reconnect another and VIOLA! She booted! Quickly i might add as well! What led me to this trial was reading that the bottom screen backlight was part of the system component check to complete the boot process. So if that failed, the entire system wont boot. That appears to have been the problem!

Hopefully this may solve someone else's black screen issue as it took me DIGGING to even stumble upon that information.

Cheers and thanks for all help!

Hi Ian!

Thanks for your comments!

Ahhh, so it was the bottom screen (backlight) all the time! It could be caused by litterly every component... It's really hard to say which component it is :(. Glad that you did find out!

Have fun gaming again!
