Kitchenaid Dishwasher KDTM404EBS water not heating. How to reset CPU?

Brand: Kitchenaid
Model Number: KTDM404EBS
Main Symptom: Water not heating
What happens & when: runs & cycles fine, water not warm

Error Code (if any): none
Parts or tests already tried: Element & high-temp thermostat

Washer is just 6 years old and rarely used.

Washer will not heat water. I just replaced the element & high-temp thermostat, but I don’t think they were bad, per resistance readings. I tried a cycle after replacing the two components, still no hot water. I physically touch the heating element during the wash cycle and it was cold.

I have read about resetting the cpu with a sequence of button selections, but none of the descriptions match my keyboard.

I cut the power off to the unit for a few days, hoping that would reset the control board and it would magically fix itself. No luck.

Which button selections do I need to press to enter diagnostic/re-set? What else could cause no-heat besides the control board?

Thanks, James

Hi @jameswoods46771

I assume you meant a KDTM404EBS?

If so here's the tech sheet that shows how to get into the diagnostic service mode -see p.3

If running the diagnostics doesn't reset the dishwasher try running them again and check if you get an 7:1 error code.

On p.4 there's a Water Heating/Heat Dry and Water Sensing with O.W.I. Sensor Water/Air/Soil/Temperature strip circuit that may help.

Since you've checked the heater and thermostat follow the directions to check if the OWI NTC sensor is OK or not as this is used to also monitor the temperature in the dishwasher.

if it is faulty you may have to replace the OWI (aka turbidity) sensor.

Here's a video that shows what to do. The part number is WPW10705575 (examples only)

If it is OK then most probably there's a problem on the control board.

Correct, I fixed "KDTM". Thanks you so much for the tech sheets. I will continue on trouble-shooting. Appreciate you!

I took the OWI Sensor out, and it was covered in slime. Cleaned it, re-installed. Ran a whole diagnostic cycle. Had error code "7-1" which is heating circuit. Cleared codes, tried to run a short high-temp wash cycle, still no heat.

I would have thought the OWI sensor would only increase the temp and/or length of cleaning cycle if the water was deemed "dirty", not tell Control to shut the power off to the element.

I guess I'm left with replacing the OWI Sensor and control board at this point. No way to test either. I just hate being a parts shotgun, but no choice now.

@jameswoods46771

The strip circuit on p.4 shows how to test the OWI NTC thermister and gives its resistance values at temps of 77°F and 140°F
