iPad Pro 2020 shows battery symbol, after seconds turns off

Hi,

I've got some issue with my iPad Pro 2020 and hopefully get some ideas how to repair it here.

If I connect a charger to my iPad, it shows the battery loading symbol. After couple of seconds that screen changes to the battery symbol with the cable for 2-3 seconds, before the screen turns black. After that it begins again with the battery loading screen.

I've already tried loading the iPad for a whole night with differenct chargers, replacing the USB-C port and heating up battery, but no change.

Before this situation the cable needed to be in a special position in the charging port to recharge the battery, so I assumed a broken USB-C port. But after replacing that port it's still the same situation.

Last time it recharged to about 10 %, before it stopped recharging completely.

Replacement battery is currently not available, but I was wondering if this might fix my issue? Or might the logic board be the problem? And how could I test that?

Does anyone maybe have an idea what the problem might be?

Thanks in advance!

Does it run long enough to check the battery section in the Settings section? You may need to get part way then continue a few times if it holds your last point.

The other option is to get a USB-C power meter placed in-line with the charger to monitor things, or lastly if you have a Mac system install CoconutBattery Plus version to gain access to the iPhone/iPad Battery Details in Menu Bar option so you can see deeper details of the iPad's battery status.

The fact the system wants to start does aim us to a power issue

Thanks for your reply! The system doesn't start, it only show the battery screen (first without "cable symbol", then with "cable symbol") before turning off. I tried getting some info about the battery with CoconutBattery, but the iPad doesn't seem to be recognized by the system.

I've ordered a USB power meter that should arrive on tuesday. I'll update my post as soon as I got measurements.

Again, thanks for your reply and your help!

Hi @danj,

hi all,

I've ordered a USB-C power meter and got the following measurements:

* As soon as I plug in a 96W (MacBook non original) charger the power meter shows, that the iPad consumes about 5V and 0.6A. The device shows the battery screen

* After couple of seconds the screen switches to the battery screen with the loading cable, and after 2-3 seconds the iPad turns off -> the power meter also (!) restarts

* Then it repeats from the beginning with the battery screen and 5V 0.6A

Using a lower quality/power charger the iPad behaves similar, but the power meter doesn't reset. Voltage stays around 4.85V but A drops to ~0.02A when the iPad switches to the battery screen with the loading cable.

It goes back to nearly 0.6A when the screen turns off. After that it shows some second the battery screen with the same voltage and amps, before the screen with the battery and the loading cable re-appears and the amps drop.

Any ideas what might be the cause?

Best regards

Nik

@nik25432 - Sadly, the logic board needs attention as the power logic is messed up! Is this your model? iPad Pro 11" 2nd Gen

Thanks @danj - I already suspected so but hoped I was wrong.

Yes, I've got the A2230 model.

As far as I've seen there is no real possibility to order a new logic board and I assume that also would be more expensive than the whole iPads worth, right?

Or do you maybe have another idea I could try?

Thanks again for your great help!

Best regards

Nik

@nik25432 - This might be repairable but an expert in iPad logic board repair in upstate New York (just outside of Buffalo) I know of one shop that eats them for lunch😁
