Hi @lcs48417

A lot will depend on the exact model variant of the CQ40 series laptop you have.

See either the product label on the bottom of the laptop, which can then be used to confirm what model chipset is used on the motherboard or check in Device Manager > System Devices to see the chipset make and model number.

The CQ40 series motherboards can have either an Intel GL40 chipset, an Intel GM45 chipset or an AMD780G chipset.

The different model CPUs that can be used on the motherboard depends entirely on which ones are compatible with the specified chipset on the motherboard. Also Intel CPUs will only work with Intel chipsets and AMD CPUs only with AMD chipsets.

The chipset is the interface between the motherboard and the CPU

For my case it's CQ40-306TU

Unfortunately, I can't find any information that describes what your laptop motherboard actually has installed now.

The only thing I found was this link for the model number you posted that showed the various CPUs that are compatible, depending on the chipset.

You may have to access the motherboard and either remove the CPU and check what information is printed on it i.e. Intel or AMD model number or locate the chipset on the motherboard and check its model number and then compare them to the list in the link.

Given the ram specs (see p.10 in the manual of the link) the motherboard only support up to 8GB of DDRII PC2-6400 (800-MHz) so even if you insert a better CPU performance will still be limited by the chipset and the slower ram.

Maybe able to install a lite Linux OS instead of Windows, otherwise it will be too frustratingly slow to use. Win7 might just be OK but nothing higher.

I does have access to motherboard but i didn't find any of the information about the cpu that printed on it and since it came with Win7 i might try using it but if i can't use i will install some lightweight linux or use it as server for some task and mine came with 2GB of ram so i will try to let you know
